So, what do you recommend for Brunswick?

all under 500$

Fujifilm FinePix E550
Olympus C765 UZ - the C770 has a Hot shoe prob find it under 500 as well
Nikon Coolpix 4300
Minolta DiMage S404
Not bad, but $359.00 shipped still looks like the best all around deal to me. Personally, I'll sacrifice portability for an even better, larger camera, but I know I'm in the minority on that.

They're outa stock. Amazon has it for about the same price, with no tax for you Cali people.

Consider the difference in body style. That wasn't really one of my criteria when I was looking for a camera. I bought an s200 and don't think I'll ever be able to get a larger camera from now on. I like being able to keep a camera in my pocket and not have to lug around a case for it.

I would suggest getting the cheaper of the s series. If you think you REALY need the extra mega-pixel, go ahead and spend the green, but I would probably just the cheaper camera and plan on upgrading in 2-3 years.

That critical feature is strictly for allowing the camera to lock focus when lesser cameras would be unable to. Between that, the hotshoe, 4X zoom, fairly bright Zeiss lens and nice price, it's not much of a contest.

$52.00 SanDisk 256MB Memory Stick Pro VS $40.00 Sandisk 256MB CompactFlash Ultra II
Oh, the horror!

SanDisk Ultra II - Flash Memory Card - 512 MB 118.99

Sandisk 512MB Ultra II CompactFlash Memory Card Retail Free 2nd Day $62.75

mem stick is 2x as expensive, and slower CF media which is fine for P&S digitals is even cheaper

Memory sticks are NOT 2x as expensive. You can get a 256mb Pro Sandisk for about $40 AR when they're on sale. And a 512mb Pro Sandisk for between $70-80 when they're on sale. Media shouldn't be a concern when deciding on a camera.

brunswickite,
Get a V1. You can pick one up for under $400 and sony memory is getting cheap now. (512mb Pro/$70-80) The V1 will take great shots in auto mode! And what everyone is saying about sony's hologram AF laser assist is true. This camera focuses in NO light (see pic below). If it's too big for you, try the P150. It takes awesome pics also, but with less manual features. The only drawbacks of the V1 IMO, is the battery life (apporx 80 mins of shoot time) and it's slightly slower recycle/response time compared to the new line of sonys. The V3 has been announced, should be out near the end of the month, it looks sweet. I'll probably be selling the V1 to buy it, if reviews and user opinions pan out.
