I am in the market to buy a digital camera, and would like to spend up to ~450 on a camera. I know alot of people on the boards are digital camera experts and would like their opinions on the best ones :)

Right now i am thinking A95, s410 or s500, but not sure...

i got the s410 because the A95 wasn't out at the time and it was more affordable than the 500.

Inch up to the DSC-V1 and save yourself the trouble of going through another upgrade cycle. The Hologram AF Assist makes it worth the price bump.
 • The DSC-V1 uses the same Hologram AF Assist as that found on the DSC-F717. The Hologram AF Assist feature is a Sony-exclusive laser focusing system designed to achieve accurate focus on subjects with little contrast in dark conditions. It projects a safe, visible laser hologram pattern directly onto the subject so the camera can detect the contrast between the edge of the laser pattern and the subject itself.

The W1, P100, and P93 are missing an external flash hot shoe*, and the Hologram Auto Focus Assist, which is a HUGE asset to the V1 and F717. If you were referring to the P72 (instead of P74), it doesn't have those options either. The P72 is one of the cameras I had to return. I don't remember the "focus lock in low light issue" as much as the lag between pushing the shutter button, and actually taking the picture. It seemed like forever! Took awesome pictures, though!

*How important is an external flash? Ask Adul...

You might want to start by taking a quick look at the differences between the various Canon camera model lines.

It's going to come down to how often you think you'd use the manual features of your digital camera. If you plan to leave it in automatic mode, you might want to instead opt for a slimmer camera and go with the S- series. The A- series Canon cameras are a bit bulkier and definitely heavier, thanks to their use of non-proprietary 4 x AA batteries for power.

On the spot recommendation: The Canon PowerShot S60 on sale at OneCall for $403.74 shipped. You still need to buy a 512MB CompactFlash card and a case. You'll love the camera, though. :)

Lastly, sign up at CanonTalk.net for 5 MB of free gallery space and upload some test shots, please. We need to enlarge our member base so we can provide people with bunch of examples of what the various Canon cameras can do.

Sony W1>Canon s500 (Sony has been rated equal or better in pics, but takes AA's and has a 2.5" screen. Both cameras are tops but the W1 is the winner here.)

Canon A95 has more manual controls than those above. The Sony W1 has enough manual setting for most except the anal enthusiasts.

For a manual camera in the Canon A95 league, check out the Fuji FinePix E550 ($320 street). It's cheaper. Has 6MP. Take's AA's as well. Has better movie mode at 30FPS. Has wider aperture (32.5mm vs. 38mm--makes a BIG difference in indoor cramped quarters). Has longer telezoom at 4x.......In other words, it's a no brainer winner at the moment in this category.

If you want a better picture taker than all of the above and SMALL, check out the upcoming (this month) Panasonic FX7/FX2. It's the only camera with Optical Image Stabilizer. This makes a BIG difference in getting sharp pics in low light. It's picture taking abilities in all areas is top notch. Along these lines, its little brother, the FX5, beat out 12 cameras in a 5-6MP P&S shoot-out in the August ed. of "Digital Camera Shopper", with cameras from Sony, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, Ricoh, etc...........The FX5 is less refined than the FX7 since it has better OIS and Venus Engine 2 technology....thus the FX7 should be that much better. It should go for <$400 street this month.

HERE are picture samples of the Fuji E550 and Panasonic FX7. Look at the green grass pics. Look at the lower left hand corner. Look how sharp the FX7 is compared to the rest. That's the legendary German Leica lens in action folks. ;)

Also for your consideration, a camera with an extra long zoom lens (under $400 street this month): Nikon Coolpix 4800.

The S60 and S70 have SUBSTANTIAL pic taking problems:

1.) Vignetting (dark corners in pic): DO this test. Take a shot with and then without flash at widest zoom 3,4,5 feet from a white wall. Download them onto the computer for analysis. You'll see such substantial vignetting as to totally make this camera not worth buying. Despite it otherwise good picture taking qualities.

2.) Purple Fringing: While many small sensor digital cameras have this issue in one degree or another in high contrasty environments, these 2 Canon models excel at fringing at all levels of zoom.

3.) Pincushioning & Barrelling: Also marked, but can be somewhat forgiven.

Fringing and Vignetting are unacceptable at this price-point however.

Avoid at all costs until Canon get this fixed on future models.

Fuji should have included a AF assist lamp. I would have bought the 510 if it werent for that. And the longest shutter availble is 2 seconds I think.

yes too few cams have a AF assist lamp but its becomming more common, and when was the last time you made a grater the 2 sec exposure with your P&S digital cam? my Oly 720UZ will do up to 8 secs and i plaied with that on 2 night, hell the D70 can do up to 6 hours, ive hardly used that feature either, i have done some 10 sec ones,
