Does this look good?

"One issue many people have with the digital connectivity on Creative sound cards is the upsampling algorithm it employs. The card at times takes audio and upsamples it to 48KHz and outputs that out the digital connection. Most music is 44.1KHz and upsampling is a process often looked down upon in the audio world. After years of not having an option to disable upsampling on their Audigy series of cards, X-Fi cards can be set to output bit-perfect at 44.1kHz without upsampling. This is possible in Audio Creation Mode."

Looks good :(

I am going to go end myself for providing inaccurate information...no on loves me anymore...the world is dying....the pain is too much....etc..etc...insert more emo here

:( why did this happen to meeeeeeee :(

Go listen to your new RTi6s and cheer yourself up ;)

Even that is somewhat depressing because now I can no long enjoy music in my car....it sounds like crap in comparison :(

Hahaha just kidding I love it and when I am in my car I just think how much better these songs would sound at home....

Hey Jello...about that Sonz method...if it nets me an SVS...I might do it :lips:

Oh, you looked it up?

Just do yourself a favor and replace the Kenwood for Christmas or something.

I think that will be the plan...work over xmas and get this "boombox" outta here...its puts out bass(only to 38 Hz) but its similar to what you hear in people who have "upgraded" their sound a bit too much in their Honda's

oh my

The things we do for audio. :D

Got that SVS this week Jello. Its nice and big. Haven't had a chance to really see what it can do yet though, hopefully will tonight. I'm also planning to buy an Infocus 4805 again. Been up all night changing crap in my apartment for it. I think I'm gonna sell off my Polk's and possibly buy a few pairs of the Insignia's for a 6.1 setup so that I can save up some money for something nicer.

I had to empty out my PMs yet again earlier this week. I don't remember what you ended up getting. Did you get a PB10 or were you quick enough to get that $500 20-39 PC+?
Either way I think you're going to be very happy :)

The receiver doesn't seem to be picking up the digital stream. I'm using VLC and I think I've set everything right in it and the X-Fi Audio Console.

EDIT: OK, I got it. There was the one setting hidden in the audio properties to enable Digital IO. I figured doing this in VLC and the audio console would be enough, but no. Thanks for the help guys.

Welcome to AT. I'm glad you got it working

I was able to get the 20-39 PC+. Turns out the guy selling it used to trade on here quite a bit. Got here in like 3 days by UPS Ground (and wasn't beat to hell when I got it either, I was amazed). Which reminds me, what am I doing on here and not seeing what that bad boy can do?

Oh man, I had it turned about maybe halfway up and the overall volume low on the reciever and my friend was in playing Unreal Championship 2 and I went to jump in the shower. I could feel the booms from when he'd shoot a rocket and yeah, just had to smile everytime. I still haven't tossed in any of my reference movies to check out. The main reason is that the projector I was going to buy, the guy ended up selling to someone else, and so I had rearranged my front room for it (although it works good for my TV now too so no big deal), and had not gotten around to hooking anything up yet.

Gonna have to pull out the old CDs and give a few of them a listen. Gives me a good reason to have a little party over here for Halloween or something. I should probably give the neighbors fair warning and invite them over as well. :D

Excellent thread jello, cleared all my doubts about digital audio :)
AT shud make it sticky IMO

I have one doubt though...is there any effect if my sound card is capable of producing only 16bit audio, compared to one that produces 24bit, if i'm using analog connections ?

What soundcard do you have again?

I guess the easy answer would be that if you got a speaker system capable of a digital connection, you'd try both and make your own decision.

I have an Audigy 1 Gamer...though its specs say its produces 24Bit output, but i've heard on the net, its fake 24bit....so wanted to know will it matter when analog connection is used bcoz analog output dosen't uses bits?

Well the sound starts out digital, so it has to do some processing to give you analog.

Unless you're having problems with it, using the Audigy with analog should work fine.

^^I don't have any problems as such, just that I wanted to know....what this 24Bit in Sound cards refer too..?
So does this means, 24Bit Audio is only benifitial for people having digital speakers ?

24-bit can be a spec for the Digital to Analog conversion, so that would be significant for someone using analog as well.

24 bit chunks of data have much more detailed info then 16 bit chunks of data. So the sound is closer to the original.

Greetings.
I have been lurking around for a few months, trying to configure my first pc-as-source mid-fi stereo system. I am currently looking for PC hardware to output "bit perfect" 16bit 44.1kHz audio in 2 channels only. If i go after upsampling+interpolation or dithering it will be on some outboard hardware.

This is the relevant mid-fi piece of equipment i am considering for immediate purchase:
Perpetual Technologies P-3A DAC, (toslink, coaxial, AES / EBU, and I2S inputs, analog RCA coaxial out)
Equipment i may purchase later include mods for the above or something like the below:
Emprical Audio Off-Ramp I2S (USB input, I2S output)
Perpetual Technologies P-1A digital processor (coaxial, AES / EBU, and I2S inputs, I2S output)

To accomodate these possibilities i would like to have both RCA coaxial S/PDIF and toslink optical S/PDIF ports somewhere on my computer.
My questions are:
1. Can i buy any motherboard with onboard audio that has both coax and optical out and still operate in the "bit perfect" realm?
2. Does the audio chip on the mobo really matter if i am not going to use any of the analog lines out, if so, which are most suitable to my needs?
3. I've heard of the AV710--if i can't just use a mobo, is there a simple, inexpensive card that anyone can recommend that will do 2 channel "bit perfect " with both optical and coaxial out?

--thanks

Hey roku, welcome to AT.

I have a lot of products from AV123 / Perpetual Technology goodies :D
I've heard good things about those units but am personally not not hardcore about music to go to that level ;)

Motherboard audio in digital form will tend to be better than analog, but you can still run into problems. The noise floor might not be as low and such.

If you're going to spend that much on external devices afterwards, I would highly recommend looking into a good soundcard as to not bottleneck your performance initially.

I honestly have not looked into bit-perfect options other than the chaintech card, so I'm not sure which ones would offer that for digital coaxial output.

roku, as far as bit-perfect goes, the chaintech is unbeatable at $22. if you need coaxial output, you could add an external coax/optical converter for less than the price of other cards. some soundblasters can support bit-perfect through the use of the front bay panel. for super sweetness, x-meridian.
