Different problem: NF7-S install issues

Hey all, (new issue...please look at bottom post)

I have a Samsung 900NF tied to an ATI 9700 Pro. The res is 1600 x 1200 at 85hz. Unfortunately, the monitor displays some sort of strange flickering/shimmering. It simply started spontaneously. I have tried using a DVI adapter, as well as turning off DDC in the video settings. In addition, I have both updated drivers and done a reformat, all to no avail.

I posted about this problem about two months ago. After some helpful hints from AT members, I thought the interference might have something to do with my room/dirty power connection etc. Since then, I have moved to a new apartment (for different reasons ;)), but the problem remains. One thing I have noticed since then is that ATI Smartgart refuses to leave Fastwrite 'On', and leaves AGP settings on "off". Could my video card be having problems? Has anyone else had similar probems? Perhaps my PS is having problems?

Only when I turn the refresh rate to 60hz does the problem go away. Of course, that introduces a different problem... ;) Maybe I should try BNC connectors? Any thoughts?

Personally I would try hooking the monitor power up to a different wall outlet preferably on a different electrical circuit. There could be something on that circuit causing just enough interference to make this do this. I've seen this with a monitor on the same circuit as a florescent light and it did it.

Hmm ..that might be it. I'll give it a try when I get home later today. :) Anyone else?

Aighty..tried a different outlet that's on a different electrical circuit. The shimmering/flickering remains...:frown:

I'm currently looking through a goldfish bowl. ;) Still, thanks to AMDskip. Any other ideas?

I was wondering. Seems your monitor is an lcd and not crt right?

I do know that with crt monitors that there are cheap connector cables and there are good ones with a choke on at least one end, preferrably both ends, a big bump in the cord just before the connector. These are superior cables and often eliminate probs.

Now, though, i am guessing, but you are using a dvi connection right?
Is it the same principal here, some cables are better than others?
Do you have an extension on your cable?

Yep..The monitor is set to 85hz, and won't go any higher. I've even installed RefreshForce, with no results. :frown:

I believe there may be one way to at least partially test the power that is coming into your wall plug.
Hook up a ups to it, then hook the monitor to the ups and move the setting on the ups so that it is very sensitive to power fluctuations.
This can help you find out if incoming power is not very reliable and also it may help you with your problem with your monitor.
I had very poor power in my area and i had to connect my computer and monitor to a usp. I have it on a mid setting and about once a month my ups has to work for a second or 2 as the power drops off coming to my wall plug. Before i installed the ups my computer would shut right off.

I dont know if this will address your particular problem or not, just trying to be of help. If not, sorry about that.

I had a similar problem with my Compaq P910 with the refresh rate.
(Not the flickering.)
Reforce would only show up to 85hz.
When I use aida32, it gives me selections for higher numbers for the monitor.
Since I don't know where my manual is right now, I used them in reforce by "adding"
them to the selections and deleting the lower ones.
Now I'm getting rates above 85hz.

I'd be looking at SmartGart as a possible culprit. I don't know what OS you are using, but here is a link to the Win98 SmartGart uninstaller.

SmartGart Uninstall

If that doesn't work (the utility), try this from the ATI faq about SmartGart:

SMARTGART cannot be disabled, but it can be removed from your system. Please
note that SMARTGART will only be installed if the ATI setup program is used
to install the display driver. To remove SMARTGART, use the Windows->Control
Panel->Add or Remove option to uninstall the ATI CATALYST display driver.
When the system is restarted the operating system will inform you that "New
Hardware" has been detected. Locate the directory where the driver is
located and complete the driver installation. The ATI driver will now be
installed without SMARTGART

So, I would uninstall the drivers as mentioned. Reinstall after reboot, but NOT with the
ATI installer. Just point Windows to the folder where the drivers live.

Also, reset your pc bios's AGP settings. toggle them to something other than what they
are now, save the settings, and let the reboot start. But don't let it boot to Windows,
just go back into the bios and reset the AGP settings to what they normally should
be.

Well..I used ATI's SMARTgart uninstaller. Got rid of those. Uninstalled old drivers. Rebooted. Installed new drivers from device manager. After driver install, rebooted, and installed the Control Panel. SMARTgart is nowhere to be found, but the problem remains. Also, I noticed that the BIOS screen also has the flickering problem. Maybe my motherboard's AGP slot is malfunctioning?

As a fact-finding test, move your monitor into the middle of the room, away from the walls/floor/ceiling, speakers, wiring, etc as much as possible, and see if that stabilizes it. Some monitors are susceptible to 60Hz shimmy from nearby AC wiring in the walls, and this is really a nuisance if you don't have a lot of options for desk placement.

Have you tried the simple things, like Degaussing? I'm sure it's an option on your monitor's front panel.

Also, have you looked at your video card on the motherboard? Fan working OK? Are there any wires running across the top of it (like audio wires or anything from the power supply)?
Can you move the wires off to the side somewhere if they are present?

I have degaussed many times over. The video card was replaced two days ago, as was the power supply with no results. Wires were checked and rerouted, with no results. The monitor is on a different electrical circuit. The strange thing is that nothing extraordinary preceded this problem. It just happened. :( Thanks for the suggestions though. At this rate, I'll upgrade the rest of my system before resolving this problem. ;)

Nope..flickering remains, and my computer has crashed several times..;) I'm beginning to think my mobo has a problem.
