What is the saying?

Debating on the internet is a lot like the special olympics. It doesn't matter if you win or lose, at the end of it all, you're still retarded.

CkGunslinger,

Dave has a very nice link in his profile and you will see he was more than just attacked. I know I don't have to defend him, I know you were kidding, and he can take care of himself. But do look at his web page, it's and eye opener!!!!

Okayyy... Dave where did it go!!!!!!!!!!

 I am aware of the his situation. But I'm not going to give him any special treatment for it. 😉

We have a technology that has never been available through thousands of years of politics, and we are wasting it.
There are many Anandtech members who'd love to have a civil discussion about politics. However, most refuse to even click on the P&N link - me included until the last few days. This was moved out of Off Topic for a reason - just to get the insults away from most posters.

So many of us would like to join it if others wouldn't ruin it. But alas, it is an impossible dream. Very few people have logical reasoning let alone proof of their logic before posting. Until that happens, every post will be a flame war.

Sign me up on that list. I love civil political discussions and have had many a spirited debate with friends of mine with no hurt feelings or resentment by any of the participating parties. The anonymity of the internet allows people to drop to the lowest common denominator. For that reason I rarely wander into the Pettiness & Namecalling forum.

Dave, to say that we can't handle the heat of a political discussion is patently untrue and I have a feeling you know it.

Sorry, I will return it after the election, actually I'll put it in now.

I have only sold 1 DSL Modem the last 3 months anway contrary to the rhetoric you will hear in here.

Agreed 100%. I rarely post here anymore since all the threads are essentially the same, just different "topics". It basically comes down to a group of die hards on each side who simply go back and forth with various name calling until someone "wins" the thread. I cringe everytime I see a variation of "owned" use in a response...like it's all a game.

Ever since the formation of P&N, it has steadily grown nastier and nastier. Originally, there was a stickied thread with rules, and the description of the forum had a bolded, capitalized line that mentioned personal flames would "not be tolerated". Sadly, this was never really enforced, for whatever reason, and once people realized that, it steadily became nastier and nastier. So, as a result, we have one of these threads every once in awhile, but sadly, nothing happens.

It would be nice if we could have a civil P&N forum, but it seems that currently, we can not. We often come up with ideas to fix things, but that's usually as far as it goes. 🙁

There are a few moderate, intelligent posters who still try to have civil debates...DonVito, Gaard, Orsorum, and glenn1 come to mind..

Anyways, great thread Train.

P&N has not changed that much. The reason Anandtech created P&N is because the Off Topic people complained about the nastiness of the political threads.

I disagree. At it's inception, it was not NEARLY as nasty as it is now, and real discussion happened. There were also frequent warnings and a few bannings for people who went too far...

This place has become a pit. There was an energy to it in its first few years (good god, have I been here that long?!), and there were (and occasionally still are) some awesome debates. But by and large it's a cesspool of partisan trolling and name-calling. I avoid it unless I really feel like being irritable for the rest of the day.

Please, we're 80 days from Election Day with what most people concede as the most they have ever seen the Country divided.

Its more divided than the 50.1% to 49.9% it was in the last election? What is it, 50.05% to 49.95% now?

There is some value to see how a (admittedly narrow) cross-section of people think (or don't). <--- Good if you are in a profession where you have to guess how other people will judge a situation. peace

He means that more Americans are polarized than ever before. You either Hate Bush/Love Kerry or Love Bush/Hate Kerry with very few independents out there.

In the few months since I've been on the forum, I have seen a decline in the overall quality of the posts.

I think, however, that this is more due to the upcoming election. Hard to find a post that doesn't specifically attack or defend one of the two candidates. When you post a topic like that, there is no room for non-partisan opinions.

Either that, or I joined in a rare moment of lucidity on this forum.

I would suggest that if you don't like the content or manner of postings by others, post in the manner that you wish to see posts. If you want an intelligent discussion post something intelligent. Stop being a leaf in the breeze. Take action and take control.

Even a good steak turns mostly into poop.

You can give but you can't make people take.

There has been no decline in quality.

It's about the same since I started here.

People just see things differently after awhile.
