From searching various forums, I noted that P4 Williamettes are poor overclockers. However, reference was always to the 423 socket Williamettes, are the socket 478 Williamettes better overclockers?

Not really... They are still built on the .18µ process. They may be a little better, since they are a later stepping... But I wouldn't count on much.

My old 1.5ghz 478pin P4 did 1.85ghz max if u consider that a good OC. Think percentage wise ;).

No. Stay AWAY. Half the cache. Much lower o/c.

Might want to re-read his post... He's comparing a Willamette to a Willamette.

I believe what he's saying is stay away from the Willys period, and I agree completely ;)

Yeah, sorry if I was brief. I thought I was just being concise ;).

Williamettes suck for overclocking period. Since you already have that 1.6, good luck. You can possibly get 2 GHz out of the thing, maybe a bit more. But you'll still be limited by your smaller cache. Plus, comparing to new P4 C's, you'll also be further limited by a low FSB, low memory speed, and no Hyperthreading.

Williamette P4's were bad when they came out, when Northwood came out, it set a record for least time a CPU took for becoming long-in-the-tooth ;).

There is some hope. I have my 1.7 at 2.1 atm. Runs very well for an old workhorse. Well not the lastest and greatest it still is fast enough for 95% of the games out there.

Now if I could only say the same about my 300W power supply ><

Man, those old P4 Willamette's were total s***e!

Bad performance anyway, then Intel decided to run them with SDRAM as well! Rofl

Twas enough to send me over to AMD.

Back now tho' :D

I skipped the Williamette line went straight Coppermine -> Northwood. Both seem highpoints in the Intel saga.
