Difference between Marine and Army?

Can anyone shed light on this? maybe a website that goes into detail as to what the difference between the two is?

I know there is the air force and the navy, the differences being obvious.

then there is the marine, army-- and on that note, what the hell is the national guard?

some help with US military please?!

Marines are a branch off the Navy. They're trained more specifically for winning battles in more adverse conditions, they're more hardcore, bald-headed, Hoo-rah, fighters. The Army has a wider range of skills... they do most of the "work" involved in a war, whereas the Marines do most of the intense fighting.

Night and day. 🙂

Marines are the first to arrive and the last to leave. The army shows up, fills in the cracks, tries to look busy, etc. 😉

Right on.

BTW Zimu, don't EVER ask a Marine this in person. They will cut you. Deep.

men join the marines, wussies join the army. bigger wussies join the AF.

paintball weekend warriors join the national guard

Yep .. Marines are pretty hard core. As stated, a branch off of the Navy. They're the first in, the last out, and kick butt along the way.

Army does alot of fighting as well, but with more heavy artillery (tanks, etc.) usually. Army also does alot of engineering/building .. roads, airports, bases, etc.

Marines are considered tougher and more elite. They are normally the hard core boys. The army is a lot larger but in general is viewed as less elite and not as well trained. The army has it's rangers of course which are an exception to the normal stereotype but as mentioned above don't tell a Marine that you think he's in the Army b/c "it's all the same to me"

BTW - National Gaurd and Reserves: Reserves are inactive Army units that belong to the federal government. National Gaurd units are the same, except they belong to a specific state: IE Illinois National Gaurd, Texas National Gaurd, etc. They can be activated the same as a reserve unit for mobilization, but they function as somewhat of a state's "army".

Ah yes, military branch rivalry rears it's ugly head yet again.

One of the shidoshi I trained with in the Bujinkan is a colonel in the AF, and it quite possiby the scariest, most dangerous person I've ever been around. I know that he, on a few occasions, has stuffed large sailors and Marines into small trash cans.

One universal truth I've learned - as macho goes up, brains go down.

Marines are considered special forces out of boot while Army is not, Marines are considered to be the same as the Army Rangers, only difference is Marines are trained to be this out of boot camp while the Army you have to go through specialized training to be an Army Ranger.

However not everyone can become a Marine, there possess different personality characteristics that no other service does. At the same time not everyone can become an Army Ranger. However *most* people can be in the Army, Navy, AF, it provides them with a different option out of highschool than going to college.

Yeah, but in the Rangers, you learn how to blow shit up with paper bags and crayons. They train you to be explosives MacGyvers. 😀
