Difference between brightness and gamma correction?

I'm trying to get a dark video to playback lighter. Is there a difference between raising the brightness or using gamma correction?
 
Yes there is a difference! If you are interested in calibrating your monitor properly and having correctly adjusted gamma levels then check this great site:http://www.photoscientia.co.uk/Gamma.htm

As a basic principle: 1st try to achieve correct gamma calibration (I use 2.0) then after that is set adjust your monitors brightness so it's not too dark yet not too bright. Everything will look much more "balanced" and better IMO.
