We started a weight loss challenge at work; get $5 for each pound you shed (seems expensive, but helps overall with healthcare costs for the company).

I figure it fits in well with my overall goal to get healthier; I topped out the initial weigh-in scale mid-January at 199.8lbs - I'm 5'7".

Started dieting, Paleo to be specific, and joined the local running club that's hosted/founded by a friend/co-worker.

Weighed in today at 188.7, so 11lbs/5% in about a month. I'm feeling really good about it, but I'm still sad because I weighed 189 in December, so I don't feel I've made a lot of progress in my overall view of things. Once I get down to 17x range I think I'll be jumping up and down with happiness.

I've found good recipes that offer substitutions; I just had Shepherds Pie for dinner, but used mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes, an egg and bacon skillet with sweet potatoes, salads, etc... I do miss the good stuff though.

The wife doesn't like the diet; she thinks that the carbs from grains/other sources are necessary. I don't disagree with her, but this is working short term and I will gradually bring those sources of carbs back into my life at a significantly reduced amount.

So yeah, losing weight, feeling great about it, just wanted to share and will be sharing going forward. :)

Great job, OP. Keep up the good work. If you feel good about the diet then you should try to continue if you can.

My only suggestion would be to add resistance training to your regimen.

I'll get there; right now I'm mainly trying to focus on weight loss and building up my cardio. I used to be really fit and I guess you could say that I did the bulking phase of muscle mass gain but never ended up doing the cutting phase.

When you say weight loss, do you mean just total weight or do you mean just fat?

If the latter, resistance training is essential in ensuring you don't lose muscle while cutting.

At this point, mainly just total weight loss, even if a little bit is muscle.

I do some at-home workouts to maintain muscle mass, but I won't be heartbroken if I lose some; can always rebuild later. Right now I just want to get my mass down.

I'm on Paleo too and the tricky thing is that you tend to lose inches rather than weight on this diet. I've gained mass in my arms, chest, legs and my waist, stomach, etc has gotten smaller, but my weight hasn't gone down as much as I would have liked. Paleo is more about how you feel, rather than how much you weigh. My 2 cents.

Down 15 pounds so far.

I ran a practice 8k Saturday for a race coming up in March; ran 10 minute miles; not great, but I was proud that I did it as I've never ran that far before in my life. I did track in high school but was a sprinter and a mile race was used as punishment.

Tonight I start training with a friend who's been running with me for a half-marathon that's 13 weeks away. I'm oddly pretty excited.
