Didn't get the job offer after all

I'm currently at a decent, though low paying tech writing job.

I came across an opportunity with a different company through someone my Mom met at her aerobics class. Apparently the company was pretty desperate to hire another technical writer.

I submitted my resume the week after Easter (April 7/8 or so). The next week, I had 2 phone interviews with a recruiter and the hiring manager. Then I completed an application that weekend. Things were moving quickly and looking promising.

I had the in-person interview on the 23rd, and I thought that went really well. I thanked the manager. The next week, they gave me a take-home writing assessment (it wasn't ready in time for the interview because of a technical problem). I submitted it near the end of April. So almost 3 weeks ago.

After a week without news, I get a generic email to say that I'd been turned down for the job. I emailed the manager to thank her for her time. She replies to say the email was sent in error and that the hiring process was still ongoing! Phew.

The next week (May 3), I got a random email from a girl I knew in high school but hadn't talked to in years. She was just hired as a recruiter in the local office! I called her and chatted for a bit and asked her to keep me in the loop.

A few days after that, the local recruiter told me they had to open the competition up and interview a few more candidates (I was the only one to go through the whole process at that point), although I was still being considered.

Last week (May 10), the local recruiter told me they were getting close to the end of the process and she would have more news for me this week after she returned from a short trip.

I got an email yesterday (May 18) to say that the position might be put on hold after all, but to hold tight until the company made a final decision.

Today I got the final word - on hold. Almost 6 weeks and they didn't end up hiring anyone .

Bah, back to work/neffing now.

That happened to me last year, too. It was a great job with a very large company and they ended up merging with another company and putting all hiring on hold until they figured everything out.

A while back I was one of two Sys Admins running the server infrastructure for a small bank. The second Admin was scheduled to be deployed overseas for a year so we needed a replacement. I got the green light to interview some folks. In total, we interviewed about 5 candidates, one who drove 100 miles and another that drove 200 miles (neither were paid mileage or for meals either, much to my dismay).

Comes time to make a decision and I showed my boss who I liked and what his salary requirements were (just below what I was making). "Too much," he said. A week later I was told we would be hiring no one and the second Admin's duties would fall to others and I had to train people, including the help desk, to assist me with managing 10 VMware hosts, 50 Windows servers, and 10 Linux servers -- which was expected to double in the next 6-12 months as the bank acquired other banks.

So I got a different job and quit 4 weeks later, too.

I interviewed for a job on 4.27. I thought the interview went really well. The lady I interviewed with said they will interview for another 2 weeks and then there will be a second round. Well, I contacted the HR person that set up the interview last week, to find out what's up.
Just got a response today, that the 2nd round hasn't started and they don't have a date set for starting them.

This was a very promising position - more progressive and challenging than my current one, and a substantial pay increase.

Come to think of it, this company is also very large and has acquired other companies recently. They're going through some growing pains trying to integrate products; I had thought that having more non-management personnel would help to speed up the process, but I guess not.

Honestly, that sounds like such a fuck up operation you might be better off. From the sounds of it, even if they hired you they'd probably end up laying you off 3 weeks later leaving you trying to crawl back to your old position or hanging in the lurch.

I never get companies that are wishy washing about hiring. Every place I've been they wait until they're totally swamped and practically fucked from lack of help before they hire, but apparently some companies are just looking for new people for the boss to bang or something?

It's always possible. I called my friend there this morning to get more details but she has yet to call me back. I assume they'll keep my resume on file though.

That's the funny thing though - when my Mom talked to the guy who works there, he gave the impression that they ARE completely swamped with documentation work, and desperately needed to hire someone. Here I am!

Also, this is a major corporation with a pretty good reputation and over 30,000 employees worldwide. I would have expected a quicker process too.

I got asked to apply for a position that close the second to last week of april

I hadnt heard anything monday and sent an email to their HR department expressing interest and asking how it was going

they let me know they were STILL 'reading applications' and would let me know in a FEW WEEKS when they were done.

some places are just slow
