Nope. I'll also never donate to a charity unless it can be done anonymously. I donated to one for US Veterans a few years ago and all of a sudden I was getting phone calls every other night from various charities.. No thanks.

Yeah, like I always say, misled once, stingy always.

I once gave a homeless guy a dollar and he didn't say God Bless. That was the last time I ever felt generous.

Done, $50, for the 1st time in my life... the banner asking for donation kept bugging me... made me feel guilty...

This.

eh, fuck em. with all their page views I would imagine some tinyyyyyy ads would do a whole lot. I'm sure they raise money elsewhere from rich people, leave the begging off the website

I donated to them last month 'cause I felt like giving. Need to re-up my NPR local affiliate membership too. Pretty much the only radio station I listen to.

I gave $30. I rarely donate to stuff like that but the site has saved my ass plenty of times when I was in school, time to give back, and I support something that is free and open, and I like how they refuse to run ads. Shows they're in it for the sake of having the site available, and not for the money. They could easily make thousands by selling ad space on there.

I still use it quite a bit. If there was no such thing as search engines, it would probably be my goto site for any information. Heck when I search for something normally that's the first site that comes up. 😛 You can then check their references to get more in depth info if you want.

Wikipedia would be in for legal shit storm if they put ads on the site....there is quite a bit of content on there that was copy/pasted from other sources without proper citation. Even with citation, large content chunks are taken with a measly "nofollow" link at the bottom. Newspapers are starting to go after Google for the tiny news snippets and that converts into traffic for the newspapers still....Wikipedia would be much worse if they tried to monetize "their" content...because it isn't theirs but taken from elsewhere on the web most of the time.

Sadly this is probably true. Copyright BS is really taking over everything. Some people/companies can't even make a living without it getting in the way of things some way or the other.

Things will get VERY ugly if they do manage to pass something like SOPA. Sites like Wikipedia, search engines etc would be shut down.

I see no need for ads. They're still running on the support of people that care to support them. There's enough people that give money to cover those that don't. If you don't want to see the request, turn it off. Better yet, stop being a cheap ass, and give them a couple dollars if you value them. If you're seeing the donation request enough times to be irritating, you must value the site.

Alternatively, pay them in work. Improve the entries, and if you see something wrong, fix it. Unlike software, improvements are within everyone's reach to contribute. If you're literate, and can use a computer, you can make Wikipedia better.

donated the other day. wikipedia is one of the actually useful parts of social media. they deserve the money for how much use I get out of it.

wish they had a way for donors to tone down the nag though.

Sent in $10. And I have to say, I'm surprised at how bad some of the reasons for not donating there are in this thread.

I donated some advice-
Hello,

I love wikipedia. It's an incredible resource, both for useful needed information and for simple browsing and reading for fun. Many times I have consulted wikipedia for something and seen the notice at the top, pleading for donations. Unfortunately, it seems you won't accept my donations in the form of bitcoins.

Part of the reason I love wikipedia is that it is open an free, not free in the monetary aspect but free in that it is free from mega-corporation control. Being forced to support a for-profit corporation such as paypal, Mastercard, or Amazon in order to donate to wikipedia is unacceptable to me. I want to donate to you, but I refuse to give any part of that donation over to a corporate entity simply because they control the payment methods.

I understand some organizations are afraid to try this new currency, for whatever reasons. However, I urge wikimedia.org to look into the details, as there really is nothing to fear. WordPress recently began accepting bitcoins, as time goes on the currency will become more mainstream, however I'd really like to donate right now and I simply can't until you choose to support the currency.

Bitcoins are free and open. I would happily donate 5 bitcoins right now, today, (current value ~$60 USD) if wikimedia.org would simply accept them.

Thank you,
