Did you donate to Wikipedia today?

Nope. I'll also never donate to a charity unless it can be done anonymously. I donated to one for US Veterans a few years ago and all of a sudden I was getting phone calls every other night from various charities.. No thanks.

Nope. I think they should monetize the site. It's an open encyclopedia and special interests already make ninja edits, and it's not like I can cite them reliably for any peer-reviewed research.

You shouldn't be citing any compilation like that. I'd frown on you citing Britannica. Wikipedia is one of the web's greatest resources. I won't be donating this week, but I may at the end of December. That's when I take my spare money, and donate to libre projects I appreciate.

Funny this thread came up, I actually threw in $10 earlier.

Granted it took them 4 years of begging...😀

I agree, I really wouldn't mind ads on Wikipedia. Everyone else on the planet uses ads.

Yup, I tossed in $10. For what I get out of it, that is nothing.

I've donated several times to Wikipedia and have never gotten other charities contacting me begging, just an email once in a while (from Wikimedia Foundation). Sounds like you picked a not so great charity. Wikipedia has a donor privacy policy that states they don't give your info out (unless the usual things: law, anonymous data, etc).

That said, you can donate anonymously if you're hell bent on donating and staying anonymous. Depending how paranoid you are, you can donate through Amazon Payments, meaning Wikipedia never sees your credit card and probably only gets your name and email address. Or, you can go buy a prepaid debit card. Register it online (fake name if they ask for it) and then spend it all on whatever you want to donate to.

It's not bad for getting an overview about a subject, though. Also you can look at the original research that the page cites for the article and find some useful stuff.

I donated $10. Wikipedia is a great resource. If it came down to it, I'd be willing to donate larger amounts.

Oh, I LOVE wikipedia and have gotten lost many times jumping from one subject to another. In fact, I usually google the wiki page first on something I'm unfamiliar with, then go find a more reliable source. It's usually pretty accurate info too. I believe in it as a great web resource, just not as a principled thing that won't use ads.

funny, thing happened, I never donated before, I am always skeptical... today I though let me do it after all its my first choice of site when I want to learn about something. I went through Paypal and when I submitted payment I got an error, it was a popup informing of some kind of database error message.. thought it was a sign, I stepped away...
