lol, I think I'm just more honest than most people.
I don't think anyone REALLY cares. I'm sure a lot of you have expensive computers and all these neat toys, but did you really need that stuff? You could have probably fed some african village for a week, but no, having the latest version of some video card is more important to you :p
I think people are just full of crap. You donate like $5 bucks, so you can block it out of your mind I think, but really, most people don't care, and then I'm a bad guy because I'm honest about it.

he actually does have a point here. most people dont care because it didnt happen to them or anyone they know and it happened so far away, they donate not becausse they want to but because they dont want to be lables as someone that did not donate

I disagree. I think most people donate out of the goodness of their heart and not because of the stigma they might encounter for not donating.

Didn't you mention something about growing up and reality?

haha now thats funny

I think my point stands. Take a poll of ATOT for a (mis)representation. Those who donated WANTED to donate. Those who did not (like me) didn't want to because we care more about ourselves.

and why did they donate?

lol, no you did not. I just copied and pasted that and added the * because of the word filter.

Somebody forgot to turn on their sarcasm meter. For a second there I was going to give you a bit of credit, but nope - your head really is that thick.

Good save.

People don't like guilt, at all. Watching 24 hour coverage of huge waves to sweep people off to their deaths...its hard for the average person to to retain some guilt. They have more money than they technically need (something you brought up earlier) so they send some of it away to relieve their guilt. Is there something wrong with that?

What the fuhh...?

Do you honestly think that the main reason that people donated was because they were concerned about what others would think? Were you at a party and get asked by your close friends "did you donate yet?" and then get frowned upon when they found out you didn't? Did your family stop by and check up to make sure that you're helping out? Did you have too hard of a time keeping your little secret from God, even though millions of people die every day?

No.

Most people didn't donate because they JUST. DIDNT. WANT. TO.

I think you are straying from the argument and going off on a tangent. This "they donate not becausse they want to but because they dont want to be lables as someone that did not donate" was the original statement. I say not all people donate because they face a stigma. And until you can prove that wrong then your argument is null.

Some people think they're selfish if they don't donate. Some people can relate to losing their children, parents, friends and want the same experience they had to not happen to the victims of the people who died in the Tsunami. So they donate money to help fund hospitals, recovery teams, etc. so they can save people more quickly and reduce the number of deaths. I didn't donate.

No offense to anyone here, but I rather give my money to a poor kid in Africa who needs food desperately rather than some homless man here who needs some weed desperately.

No they donated because it was a bandwagon. Whether it was "bragging rights" or to clear their conscience. "I donated $$ to tsunami victims". Oh yeah why? Do you usually donate to the underpriveledged or disaster victims?

and you are right I didn't donate simply because I didn't want to.

Yes, that's right. They just donate so that inside, they can think, "man, am I special. I'm such a good guy, I donated to that tsunami thing, I can stop worrying about misery and suffering now, I donated my 20 bucks".

As rare as they are in my community, I still donate to homeless people, but sometimes I do wonder whether they put it to good use. Also if I was face with a choice between giving all my money to the Africa kid than the homeless man I'd give it to the kid. I'm not trying to start a flamewar here so lets agree to disagree =).

Edit: Added the quote. Wow people post fast!

You couldn't be more completely wrong and until you can poll every single person, than you will stay wrong. People are different from you. People donate for several reasons. Are there people donating because of those reasons mentioned? Quite possibly, but saying that is the reason people donate is plain ignorant.
