Did the kennel people mistreat my dog?

My dog was in the kennel from Thursday of last week until late yesterday afternoon. She has been boarded at this particular kennel several times before, and I've always been happy with them.

Yesterday when I picked her up, as soon as she was outside the building she peed a few times - and her urine was mostly blood each time. I put her in the truck, then went inside and asked the lady at the desk if there had been any problem. The lady was very unhelpful and even defensive. She said that there were no problems written on my dog's chart, and that if I was so concerned that I should go see my vet. This kennel doubles as a vet's office (not the one we go to), but she didn't offer a quick checkup or anything like that.

My vet was closed, so I took the dog to our local pet emergency clinic. In short, she has a painful bladder infection. The vet said that if she was in the kennel, it was likely that she wasn't getting as many opportunities to pee like she would at home, which contributed to her getting the infection. While she was at the clinic, my dog peed in the floor twice - something she would never do at home.

This is what gets me - the clinic vet said that the reason she was peeing in the floor was because her bladder was so inflamed that she just couldn't hold it any longer. That means that there is no way she didn't pee in her run at the kennel. Since her urine was full of blood, that means that the kennel people had to see blood all over the floor of her run - but they apparently weren't concerned enough to write it on her chart.

I'm steaming over this.

Is yer doggy OK, Ned?

Yes - This past Thursday or Friday she finished the last of her oral antibiotics and she seems fine now. My wife is going to check with our regular vet to see if a followup checkup will be necessary.

We haven't written any complaint letters or anything yet, but we did find a much nicer (and unfortunately more expensive) kennel. It is kind of like the place Fritzo mentioned - the dogs are pampered to the point that I think I want to spend a few days there myself.

You should be. We were at the emergency vet back in December when they brought in a cat from a place that sounds very similar to the one you used. The cat ended up dieing while we were there from a plugged urinary tract. This is a very well known issue with male cats and there is no excuse for a place responsible for animals to have missed it to the point where it became fatal.

It's hard to find a good kennel. You never know what they're doing in there. I love the one near us. It's more of a pet hotel- they have a play area that they take the dogs to every couple of hours, you can order gormet meals (bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburger for dinner 🙂 ), massages, premium treats, and they have full access web cams to check up on people. My dog actually likes going there heheh.

Yeah I'd definitely be fuming mad about this if either of my dogs exhibited the issues yours is having.

That's horrible. I'm PMing this thread to my wife--she'll know more about what you should / can do than I...

Please let me know what she says. I've always been happy with this kennel before; part of the reason I chose them was because they are attached to the vet's office. Like Fritzo said, its hard to find a good kennel - I had been through several before I found this one.

Just spoke to the wife - the dog is still peeing blood. The dog got an antibiotic shot last night, and now she has to be on oral antibiotics for a min of 10 days. Not to mention that the emergency vet cost $135 out of pocket...

Screw them over for everything that they are worth. My pets are like my family. The way I see it, if I left my son with a babysitter for a few days and he came back to me where the mistreatment was obvious I would raise hell. All kinds of hell. The same goes with my pets. It happened to your dog and that is really sad. Be the hero and don't let it happen to anyone else.

That's awful. I hope there's a reasonable owner or manager that you can complain to. It would suck to take something like this to court, but that's just not acceptable. I hope your poor dog is ok.

What's surprising is that they never called you about any of it. You should talk to the vet staff there to see if they were ever informed of the problems and whether or not they looked at him. It could be something as simple as the new guy sucking at his job, that let him get that way. Still inexcusable, but at least it would explain things somewhat.

That is terrible news! The kennel staff should have definately noticed SOMETHING! Take a copy of the report from the emergency vet to your regular vet and see what they say. I would definatly talk with the kennel manager and tell them how you have been a faithful customer and to have something like that happen on their watch is very DISAPPOINTING and how you had thought they had a better quality of service than that, etc. See what they do after you saying something like that, and give them a chance to make it right for you. I would make sure there is no way the dog could have had the bladder infection before going into the kennel and just being kenneled made it worse too.

They don't care about your animal. They care about your money.
That isn't a rule though. There are good people out there.

OP, take this all the way. I would be spitting nails if someone did this to my pup.

That sounds bad ned.

I had a bad experience also. We dropped off our dog for the day and when we picked her up she had white crusty stuff all over her. We asked if anything had happened to her and they told us she had fun playing with all the boy dogs. Our dog was 9 months old and fixed.

If anyone here has a female dog please ask if they require males to be fixed or hell even both sexes. I thought this would of been standard..

Uhh, maybe try talking to the owner first...? I'm sure I wouldn't respond to you very well if they first thing I heard about this was from a lawyer.
