My dog was in the kennel from Thursday of last week until late yesterday afternoon. She has been boarded at this particular kennel several times before, and I've always been happy with them.
Yesterday when I picked her up, as soon as she was outside the building she peed a few times - and her urine was mostly blood each time. I put her in the truck, then went inside and asked the lady at the desk if there had been any problem. The lady was very unhelpful and even defensive. She said that there were no problems written on my dog's chart, and that if I was so concerned that I should go see my vet. This kennel doubles as a vet's office (not the one we go to), but she didn't offer a quick checkup or anything like that.
My vet was closed, so I took the dog to our local pet emergency clinic. In short, she has a painful bladder infection. The vet said that if she was in the kennel, it was likely that she wasn't getting as many opportunities to pee like she would at home, which contributed to her getting the infection. While she was at the clinic, my dog peed in the floor twice - something she would never do at home.
This is what gets me - the clinic vet said that the reason she was peeing in the floor was because her bladder was so inflamed that she just couldn't hold it any longer. That means that there is no way she didn't pee in her run at the kennel. Since her urine was full of blood, that means that the kennel people had to see blood all over the floor of her run - but they apparently weren't concerned enough to write it on her chart.
I'm steaming over this.
UPDATE 7/23/2007:
Yes - This past Thursday or Friday she finished the last of her oral antibiotics and she seems fine now. My wife is going to check with our regular vet to see if a followup checkup will be necessary.
We haven't written any complaint letters or anything yet, but we did find a much nicer (and unfortunately more expensive) kennel. It is kind of like the place Fritzo mentioned - the dogs are pampered to the point that I think I want to spend a few days there myself.
