Did Sopranos age well? Should I watch it?

The Wire was just fine. It's older than that.

Did it age gracefully or is it cheesy?

The Sopranos is a soap opera, no matter what anyone tells you. If you enjoy soap operas, you'll like it.

Just as is true of most any show, the earlier seasons are markedly better than the latter seasons.

i regard the sopranos like the x-files: a surprise hit that went on for years with no actual plot. you have to wade through a lot of disconnected hackery to find some entertainment.

The Sopranos is great TV. It's a bit silly at times, sure, and it's a little less gritty than The Wire; more intentional humor and whatnot. But it's a brilliant show, definitely worth watching.

I don't even think The Wire was gritty.

Boardwalk empire is excellent and i think that was made in the 1920's. HBO is good from any era. The wire > Sopranos though.

I like the Sopranos a lot. It seems like a fully-realized and plausible depiction of a modern mob enterprise, and it contains a lot of really fine writing and acting. In some ways these sorts of serialized dramas have moved on a lot since it originally aired, though, and to me its overall quality is below that of, say, Breaking Bad or Mad Men. In later seasons, particularly the final season, there are just too many clunker episodes. Still, it broke a lot of ground and in general I think it's excellent.

Yes I just started watching it for the first time. It actually has some charm, vintage late 90s feel which is weird to look back on now (I'm 26 so most time periods I look back on and either wasn't alive or don't remember).

Kind of creepy though because the first couple of episodes show Tony Soprano having panic attacks that look like heart attacks

Only watched maybe 5 episodes, was pretty boring, and unless I got really unlucky and it was only the 5 I saw, the show is very repetitive. I swear every episode I saw Tony was in a back room at his strip club getting head when some guido busts in talking about someone got shot/busted by the police/etc. Tony then smacks the shit out of the stripper and tells her to get the fuck out.

There was an obsessive amount of cussing too, as someone else mentioned it feels like the soaps my mom use to watch. Just with the addition of blow jobs and a fuckton of bad language.

You should worry less about television; go for a run, do your "chin lifts" and update your H&F thread instead. Your wedding is only a couple of months away. You don't want to be fat in your wedding pictures do you? It'll only add to the ridiculousness of that cheap suit you'll be wearing.

Frankly I found it extremely boring, but I also hated hated hated the godfather for the same reason so my opinion on these is quite negative.

The best television series ever. The acting is amazing, the writing; everything. You will not be disappointed.

Just started re-watching it (sorta) with my wife. I had not seen season 1 or most of season 2, so I got into it late. We are back to Season 3, roughly where I started many years back. The first two seasons were really good -- much better than the later seasons. The main reason for this is the tone... as the show goes on the writers fall in love with some of the characters too much and steer the tone towards Scorsese in some/many episodes. But they don't pull it off. Still, overall, I think it stands up pretty well.

A bit of both. Judging by your reviews of movies I believe you will find the first couple seasons worth the time. After that I felt it dragged on for a bit before getting closure with a bang.

It's in the eye of the beholder like anything else. I liked the Sopranos when they were on but don't really have any desire to rewatch it again...
