Long version:

I was in a cab from my house to work running late for a meeting (hence why I was in a cab). The fare was $9 and I gave him a $5 tip, totaling $14. In exchange, I asked the cab driver if he would throw out a small bag of trash I had with me from lunch...I was going to go right into the meeting and couldn't think of where a trash can would be between me and the meeting room.

Needless to say, a co-worker caught me asking him on my way out and made me feel like crap for it. The cab driver didn't say anything and took it to throw out, but I now know that after a $5 tip, it probably would have made him mad but he wouldn't have said anything. He knows where I live - hopefully he won't destroy my place.

:(

Short version:

Gave cab driver my trash to throw out. Regret it.

I don't get it, you gave the guy $5 asked him to throw something away for you and you feel bad....

Why? You gave the guy $5 for free, then asked a favour. What's the issue here?

I'm going to start charging you $5 every time you use a "U" in a word that doesn't have a "U" in it.

Also...Americans are not cheap asses like you Brits. We show our appreciation for a job well done with a couple dollars.

When my car was down a couple weeks ago I had to take 2 cab rides. One cost me $9 and the other cost me $24. I tipped each of the cabbies $10 and thought of how much it would piss you off to see me tipping someone 110% just for doing their job. (I did cropdust the cab but it was kind of an accident)

Right, American tipping systems are retarded.

What does all that have to do with the OP.

Also some words have a U in them in English even though they don't in American. I'm speaking English, deal with it.

WTF

I replied to your post and my post was definitely related to your post. So your post must be the one unrelated to the OP.

Or something like that. Where's my butter damn it??!?!?!

I just don't get it, the guy gave a tip
The guy asked a favour
The taxi driver did the favour no complaint's
The tip was like 60% of the cost.

What's the issue?

it could be construed that the OP thought he was too good to take care of his own trash. No one would honestly think this. The OP loves attention whoring and this is just another one of his ways of doing it. Look for a stock market thread soon now that this one has backfired.

Ahh righto, I suppose that I couldn't comprehend how it could be construed that way after a 60% tip explains why I didn't get it. Also I didn't know about his attention whore nature.

wtf is wrong with a $5 tip on a $9 fare? That's an over 50% tip

nothing

I'm a curious person and I have no shame so I asked one of the cabbies how the system worked. This company charged each cabby $90/day rent on the cab and they had to pay for their own gas. He said his gas averaged $140/day. Sounds about right for 10 hours of driving around in city traffic. So pretty much the first $230 a cabby makes he doesn't see. Everything after that is his.

So the percentage of the tip really doesn't mean anything with cabs. Its more about the total amount than the tip.

It means everything. A larger percentage over time will net you higher money. $10 sounds like a nice tip, but what if the total fare was > $100 ? I'm not saying that high of a fare is normal, but percentages tell a much greater story than some arbitrary tip amount.

Most people don't tip taxi drivers in the UK, but if they do it will be £1 for a £10 fare, 10% seems reasonable.

But the guaranteed $100 would mean more than a $30 tip.

When I was in NYC I had an $80 cab ride, and gave a $10 tip, (based on the fact that I heard that tipping was customary)

in europe you don't tip cabs because they actually make you pay enough to live. Less problems and their wages are safer. I think it's better this way.

Anyway you gave him lots of money for such a small favour so I wouldn't feel too bad.
