if your not hispanic how could the word "beautiful ray of sunshine" offend you?

the same reason why the n-word offends non-blacks... it's an ugly word that reminds us that, unforunately, racism still exists. personally, i can't help but feel shame and contempt whenever i hear that word.

dont go near any high school in america then

Yea, thats true in almost every high school, along with eveyr other name in the book.

But the OP was referring to a college class at the senior level.

My thoughts.
1) You are too sensitive, words do not harm people. If you think they harmed you, then you need to stiffen up.
2) Your intentions of that email were noble, but there are much better ways of expressing yourself. Quotes are for people who can't express their feelings very well.
3) I think you badly failed to see the professor's aim in the class. Set people up and then bash them down and make them seem like fools. Sadly, that is the only way to stop racism in many people. Don't try to interfere. Just sit back and watch the professor make fools of those who were racist. If the professor doesn't do that, THEN is the time for outrage.
4) Remember this is Spanish for law enforcement. Some of those on the bottom rung need to get it out of their system in a safe environment so that they won't practice racism in law enforcement.

You're right in that this is a language class. I'm also not qualified to teach morality. But Let me know what you think after you see the movie. There is some method in my madness. Best wishes, Sr. NONAME

Sounds like he's either setting you up for some learning experience or he just doesnt give a crap.

I hope he's setting something up....and I think the response indicates this.

Of course he is setting something up...

Definately a setup... Confirmed 😉

I think the above post says it effectively. The OP sounds like he's jumping to conclusions with a knee-jerk reaction to percieved injustice. For the moment, I would give the professor the benefit of the doubt, especially given the response.

Dr. King said to judge people "not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character". Unfortunately King's speech is still that, just a dream.

And that statement right there sums up why you heard what you heard today in class.

I agree...the teacher definitely has a purpose to that exercise...

McOwned? Or prepare to be taugh? My anthro professor told us first day 3 things: This wasn't archeology, that he welcomes our new blackboard overlords, and evolution was key to understand anthropology, that if we didn't like it, then we could fvck off...Sounded kinda arrogant at the time, espicially to a Christian. I dealt with it, and although evolution is key, you don't HAVE to believe it to understand anthro...I give him credit...he set himself up great...

Professors set themselves up in weird ways...they eventually teach lessons....

to be honest with you, i probably would have spoken up in the class and accidentally ruined the professor's set-up. i probably would have mocked the chuckling douchebags and audibly called them assholes. good job for holding your tongue and taking it up with the professor in an email after class was over.

Agree.

The only logical purpose for the teacher to have people say words that they think of in terms of hispanics is to draw out racist responses. The teacher definately has something going on behind the scenes and you should have realised that from the beginning.

not sure how to reply to this.

on one hand i feel its wrong of you to email something like that. He asked the students what they thought of Hispanics. he got the answer. why be upset with him over the students ignorance? unless its a ethics class i really do not see why he should try to correct them.

but if its a language class WTF was the point anyway? his job is not to change what they think of Hispanics.

It's a decent movie about a couple of mexicans who sneak across the border. Nothing really great or edgy or anything like that, just a meh movie.

what is "spanish for law enforcement" anyhow? special language skills needed to cuff hispanics?

wow.

how about telling a group of loitering latinos they need to get moving?

how about being called to a household dispute where one or more of the family members don't speak english?

how about for personal safety in a barrio someplace?

how about to read rights to hispanic people?

how about explaining the speed limit to a hispanic person who can't speak english?
