It's likely the spot you sprayed with straight bleach will turn to dust in short order.

Always dilute bleach.....

:(

Once I saw such great results on the one spot, I realized how dirty the rest of the mattress was and gave the whole thing a spritzing.

We'll see what happens.

It depends on the material too. Cotton will be destroyed by straight bleach, but maybe synthetic materials will fare better? And mattress fabric is usually thicker/more robust than say a tshirt, so maybe it will only be damaged?

Even if a gaping hole does develop, just flip the mattress over and you're good to go. ;)

You probably don't want to know. Its blood, not my blood, not normal blood.

That's why you should get a matress protector sheet. It's a fitted sheet you put on before the fitted sheet that doesn't allow stains to get through to the matress.

You'll want to use ammonia to neutralize it.

Just kidding. don't!

I honestly would not fuss it, it's not like you sleep directly on it anyway, put the sheets back on and call it a day.

Fixed...the "protector sheet," AKA rubber sheet may indeed be needed by some people...:p

Its a pillow top mattress, so no flipping. Worst case, I'll throw a mattress pad on it and this will become the guest bed.

Sunshine and fresh air should help to break down the chlorine...Put the mattress out side for a few hours...or go to an aquarium shop and buy dechlorinator. You can also buy Sodium thiosulfate (hypo) at a photography shop.

Leros why didn't you use Oxi Clean? They claim it works on almost anything, it wouldn't be on TV if it wasn't true.

Yeah, oxiclean or hydrogen peroxide would have been a much better, non fabric eating choice. :) lol

Do some pillow tops only come with one pillow? Our queen pillowtop mattress at home has a pillow top on each side to facilitate flipping.

Everyone is getting off the topic Lol. Bleaching stains out of a mattress.
Too strong of bleach will weaken the fabric and eventually eat through it. Use caution.
As for the mattress cover topic;
Mattress pads are thicker fabric that just lays on top of the mattress for more comfort.
Mattress covers are similar but have the elastic band around the edges for a more secure fit.
Fitted sheet is a thin sheet with elastic band around the edges to hold it securely on the mattress.
The flat sheet lays over the fitted. The flat sheet is to cover up with.
The fitted and flat in sets match the pillow cases.
Then the blanket over the flat sheet. The blanket is a little thick.
Then the bed spread. Which is a thin decorative to make the bed look nice and can be covered up with also.
The comforter is a thick type of blanket also for looks but can be covered up with. A comforter has some kind of either natural or synthetic material inside it for a more cushy comfort.
I'm an American, and these are the proper names of the bedding as labeled on their packaging. I recently bought them for my daughter's bed.

Off topic, sure, but at least they weren't 5 years late to the thread. :D
Lol
I never even noticed the dates. I usually check. I guess I got so caught up in reading and looking for answers that I forgot.
Well I'm happy to put a smile on your face. Enjoy your weekend.

Yeah, the fabric is no longer as soft as it used to be. Kinda like the fibers melted a tiny little bit.

yeah, bleach will destroy various types of polymers. Is it a foam or latex mattress? Even a synthetic cover could have issues. Never use bleach or EtOH on various polystyrenes/lucites. "hard" plastics. It's easy and common to use them as effective cleaners, but those chemicals will compromise the structure of these materials. small, soft fibers like that would melt and bind to each other. Hard plastics would look fine, but if you apply any normal amount of stress to them, they tend to shatter after washing with bleach or EtOH.

Now that's it's been 5 years, what happened to the mattress? Did the bleach eat a hole or not? Did you wake up one morning sleeping on floor?
