Did I just (really) upgrade my HP Printer?

I have a HP 720C Deskjet printer.

I wanted an inexpensive digital camera, so today I got the 1.3 megapixel HP215 for $100 (after MIR). To get an additional $100 CompUSA gift certificate from a combo-deal I bought the HP 842C for $70 (after another MIR). [In other words - for $170 I got the Camera, printer and $100 gift card.]

However, looking at the specs, the only difference I see between my old and new printers is the 842 is a bit faster, has 4x more memory and has ColorSmart III (instead of II). Black is still 600 dpi (best on both).

Best color on the new one is 600x1200 dpi - my old one was 600x600.

Is this really an upgrade?
Or should I save up my money and get one of the better ones?

I think that they are basically the same. I have the 722C and my dad has the 842C and output is pretty much the same. The 842C is USB but uses the 21 ml ink cartridge instead of the 42 ml cartridge that the 722C uses. This is a big difference as both sell for the same price.

Either keep the 720 or move up to one of the photo printers or 900 series.

I would take it back and get a 932 which is the next step up in the normal retail world for HP. Should cost you about 150 and I have not seen a MIR for it. It is a bit faster than the 842, and has 2400X1200 resolution. Makes the photos look much better.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Will there be that much difference with the 1.3 mp HP 215?

Will I see any difference between 1200x600 and 600x600?

Finally, to take advantage of the $100 GC - I have to buy an advertised printer. That means the next step up is the $300 (no rebate) 2400x1200 HP1000 or else get an Epson 780 ($150).

Anyway, it's a lot more $$$.

The biggest problem with the Epson is it gets hard to get a hold of the inks for the newer Epsons. As for the HP1000, anything above the 932 model (in the normal retail market) has no increase in resolution, just bells and whistles and speed.

Your replies have helped me to think more clearly. Thanks.

Since I basically got the digital camera and printer for $70 (after rebates), I will sell my old printer for probably $30-40 AND my new unopened one (minus UPC of course :D ) and use the $100 GC to get a nice one.

Problem solved. I never really considered an Epson.
