Did HP just kill the tablet market with their WebOS?

They could've probably dumped their entire inventory to outfits like Woot and other liquidation house for more money than their fire sale price. Is this a big FU to Apple and Google from HP? I gotta believe it's going to be hard even for Apple to sell $500 iPads when the consumer has been reprogrammed with lower pricing.

They only made 500,000 of them.
HP dumping them isn't going to affect the tablet market.
Now if they had produced 2-5 million? That would be a different story.

I know. Majority of people will never get to buy one. But people will still talk and people's perception can change or alter just from the news. Hardcore tech geeks make up small part of the market yet they have a big influence on what average Joe buy later through their reviews and word of mouth.

Are there a lot of apps available for it (like android)??

No, that's one of the main reasons they're killing it. Developers just never supported it as much as iOS and android. It's a pity, I had a palm pre for a while and really liked the OS, it was very good.

No one is being reprogrammed. If, as others said, there were millions and they were being sold off over the course of a month or two, perhaps.

As far as apps... if you have one, there are enough apps to easily justify the reduced price. All you really needs is the Kindle app and you're good to go.

One of those 500000 HP tablet owners will get Android working on these tablets, practically guaranteed

A one time sell-off of a relatively small number of units won't make that much of an impact. Especially when a large percentage of the buyers wouldn't have spent more than $100-200 on a tablet in the first place anyways.

Who cares, I already got my $99 16GB TouchPad from HP.com. For that price, I'm all in! :)

It may actually prime the pump for tablets.

They have a 1.5 minute boot up time, and 1/2 the speed of an iPad, they did something to make it perform like crap, the only hope is a port of Android to it, till then it's a dedicated bathroom tablet :)

Also, it really killed the low end tablet market rather than the iPad. And it's only just begun, supposedly there are a million + 7" Samsung Galaxy Tabs in warehouses/stockrooms, unsold.

Maybe I should not jump on the touchpad and just get a 7" Tab for a car computer, since I already have an Asus Transformer :hmm:

The lowend market just got destroyed. And forget the Android Honeycomb tablets. Sales were poor before but now Tegra2 Honeycomb tablets are dead. Samsung and the retailers will end up with million plus "10 Honeycomb Galaxy Tabs. There's going to be bloodbath in Android honeycomb tablet market and things can snowball quickly. I really think even Apple will be effected by this. This was intentionally done by HP.

Is it bad that at $99 I still don't want one?

I was tempted to get one last night, and was close to purchasing, but I stopped myself because I knew I wasn't going to really use it. I'll wait instead for an updated ipad next year for my first tablet.

If you want something for the car, I'd strongly suggest getting a 7" Android tablet. Something with a Cyanogen Mod port to it. You can customize the hell out of it for a car interface, but it will likely have your core functionality working - Wifi, BT, audio out, GPS, etc. Something with an FM tuner could really be built around as a car media center, especially if you have a Double DIN dash opening and want to get creative.

I have little interest in tablets of any kind, but I mentioned in the other thread I'd be interested in a crappy tablet at a good price. $100 has my interest. I'd prefer Android, but for $100, a disposable,, dead end product is attractive.
