Did anyone watch Datelines "To Catch an I-jacker"?

This show was just the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

Basically the premise of the show is that dateline "plants" these ipods in places at malls, as if they misplaced the item or forgot about it. Then they wait for a person to come by and take the ipod, then ambush them later asking them why they "stole" it.

One person on the show displayed my thoughts exactly. In my opinion, you can equate finding a brand new unopened ipod to finding a $100 dollar bill. I mean who are you really going to turn that thing in to? If you turn it into lost and found at the mall, it isnt going to go farther than the person behind the counter. How are you supposed to claim your missing ipod? There are no distinguishing marks on the ipod and no real way to find the owner. Its a lost cause.

I am not the type to steal at all, but if I was walking in some touristy area (they did it on fremont st. in las vegas) and saw a brand new unopened ipod sitting on a bench and nobody was near it, I would probably take it myself as well. There would be a 100% chance of me or someone else taking that ipod.

As for the people that stole the ipod off of car dashes and out of purses, that is where I would actually turn the ipod into lost and found. I would never touch the ipod on someones car dash. But if i found a purse with an ipod in it, i would turn it into lost and found b/c the person would actually be able to claim the purse and everything in it!

FOR CLARITY: These ipods were still brand new in the box. The box was opened, but the ipod was unused. There would be no distinguishing marks, music, cases, or ANYTHING on the ipod. It would look just as if you bought it brand new from the store

Sounds pretty dumb. If I find something laying on the ground in the middle of a public area, I'll take it as long as there's no way I can ID the person who lost it.

It's about morals. I personally would turn it in because I wouldn't want to own it knowing how I got it. To each his own :)

If I found one, I would turn it in to the lost and found, then the responsibility is off my chest and on to theirs. If I lost an item in the mall I would report it, just in case someone turned it in.

I agree. Hopefully, the person at the Lost and Found will be honest to hold it and the person that lost it could identify it by the songs on it.

I lost a pair of Oakley's once at the supermarket. Drove home to discover the loss. Drove back to the supermarket and someone had already brought it to the Customer Service desk. Gave me a little faith in humans.

This is the exact difference I am talking about.

I would definitely turn in the oakleys. They are something that could definitely be identified . At least you can describe the color/design of the item.

There is no way you could differentiate a brand new ipod from another brand new ipod.

"Yes, its an ipod. Its uhhhh black in color and it has a screen and plays music"

Yeah, but how many people lose their iPods in the Mall? Maybe one a month/year? If it was still powered, it could be turned on to identify songs.

when my ipod worked, you could enter at least your name into it with the software that came with it. not sure they still do that anymore though, i don't see why they wouldn't.

You know, If they entraped me like that I'd stand in front of Hansen and just say "P-P-P-P-POWERBOOK!!!!" over and over.

Seriously though, I'd tell him "Finders Keepers bitch, now fuck off."

What if you guys found a $100 bill ? Keep it, or turn it in ?

No agenda, just curious.

I'd just point the other direction and tell Hansen, "Stranger giving candy to a little girl!!!" and run the other direction.

Loser:Uh hi, I'm feeling really stupid, I left my new ipod at the food court in front of the Orange Julius, it was still new in the box and sitting in the shopping bag and everything, is there any chance someone found it and turned it in?

Lost and Found: Uh, I'm sorry sir, we've had 47 people turn in unopened ipods today, there is no way we would know which of these is yours unless you can differentiate it from the others.

Of course, I don't buy things and just leave them in potted plants at the mall. I wouldn't leave $5000 in twentys on the table at the food court either, but I'm pretty sure if I was that stupid, and someone did turn the money in(yea right) that I'd probably be the only person to come up to lost and found looking for the 5 grand on that given day.

Google turns up the show online on a msnbc site. The ten minutes I watched were pretty crappy.

I wish they would plant an ipod in my truck, then try to get me when I drive off with it.

That reminds me once, in the Air Force, this bitch Airman that was one rank higher than me took my computer speakers off my desk and hid them, because I went to lunch with my music playing lightly. So Then he went out on a job and left his Ipod sitting on his desk, so I through it in the trashcan under his desk. (I took it out later when he was gone after he about had a coronary, and put it right back on his desk where he left it). That felt good.

That would be hilarious. Just start saying powerbook and start trying to grope him. Wonder what he would do.

kind of reminds me of when my daughter 5 years old then bought a book at Barnes and Noble. Book was in a plastic barnes and noble bag. We where sitting on a park bench "union Square" New York. We leave the bench take about 10 to 15 steps and I ask her wheres your book? we turn around the bag was gone from the bench.

My daughter was of course upset and learned a valuable new york city survival skill. But you have to admire the efficiency of the New York City clean up crew :)

P.S.
If it was me and found the Ipod at a mall I would probably turn it to lost and found.

peace

I found about $20 in the parking lot of a bank. I went in side and asked if they had a lost and found or if any one had reported any lost money. They thought I was crazy for even asking and told me to just keep it. I guess it would be really easy to claim lost or dropped money at a bank. To their credit at least they didn't take it and keep it.
