Well, that settles it then! If you say a short sleeve shirt and a hand gun is enough to deal with mexican drug lords, terrorists and what not - then it's a done deal! You should be running the country - you clearly know where it's at.

You are trolling.

Those protestors are not terrorist. They are mad someone was killed by a police officer and are exercising their rights to protest.

Just because some criminal activity such as looting has mixed in with the protest does not mean the police can bring out military equipment.

Why do you think we have a right to assembly?

People have been against the militarization of the police for a very long time now. It's one of the primary complaints against the war on drugs.

Against the Patriot Act and the War on Americans Terror

President would have done something good for this country if he addresses police militarization. But he alone cannot get the job done. It is not enough to simply pause or slow down the militarization, it needs to be reversed.

I think you and Moonie should have a talk. Clearly you have a conservative brain that is scared.

If I were running the country the drug war would end. No more cartels.
I'd also get us out of the ME. Boom, terrorists lose a reason to come at us.

PS you watch too many movies.

You so smart and intelligent - you clearly know exactly what you are talking about - on any subject, no matter what.

Because you know the real danger in this country is about a child eating a government funded lunch - not all that other made up crap I linked which detailed real world situations.

It is amazing how you aren't a nationally recognized super genius, that we should all listen to and follow.

Queens - and crime has increased quite a bit in the last 5 or so years. I still don't see heavy armored police forces.

Well I can't speak for your particular neighborhood in Queens, but in general crime in NYC has continued its multi-decade decline.

As for not seeing heavily armed cops in Queens, no shit. Come to the south Bronx or central Brooklyn and I'll show you some heavily armed cops. I remember a cop in full on body armor carrying a gas grenade launcher walking through the lobby of my apartment building.

Also, raids on who? Random innocent civilians? Or, suspects? And out of those suspects, how many where innocent - not charges were filed and then found innocent - but, actually innocent, as in the cops picked the wrong house and they screwed up.

Just because the person ends up being arrested doesn't mean that the tactics used to arrest them were wise or justified. These raids terrorize the population and injure/kill people unnecessarily.

I chalk those raids up to American's drug appetite. And, we then move into the drug war debate. Which I feel certain drugs should indeed be legalized.

Well I think all drugs should be legal, but that's neither here nor there.

So, there is a heavily armed illegal drug lab on the corner of 5th ave and 185th street - do the police show up in pea shooters and segways and if they get shot up THEN armor up? Or, do they show up armored before taking the lab down? Their tactics will come from their preparedness. You can't prepare after the shit hits the fan.

And, this is reality. Drug barons have been heavily arming their people for quite a while now.

Why are they leading a frontal assault on a drug lab to begin with? There are so many other ways to apprehend those working in it.

This is in fact exactly the problem I'm talking about.

It is very unfortunate when the wrong person is mistreated by overzealous police - I would never doubt/dispute that - but, it will happen. What is the rate of the wrongly arrested and abused truly innocent people? Not charged and found innocent, but, again, the wrong house was raided, etc.

Why do only the truly innocent matter? Also, do you realize how many settlements the city gives out each year for police related incidents?

Perplexing problem this thing about what "appropriate response" is.

One the one hand you have folks that want to protest peacefully and do just that. On the other you have scattered among them these other folks that, due to whatever agenda that motivates them, want to protest violently, whether it be for revenge, for spite, for fun and excitement, for free stuff that they otherwise couldn't afford, for satisfying pyromaniacal urges.....you name it, it's all in that crowd, and the cops have to treat each individual in that mass of humanity that they have been tasked to keep civil when civil disobedience is somehow lawful with....due diligence and restraint?

Clever how these folks with malicious intent hide themselves among the innocent just as Hamas hides among the innocent to pursue their own agenda.

So how does a police force use appropriate action when to administer such action requires them to use respect and restraint on the innocent ones in the crowd and in this very same crowd of people, use "tough love" on the ones that are there to loot, spread hatred and discontent, and "get even" with the cops?

Now add to that the broadcast media in the crowd who not only wish to get the "scoop" but get right in there with the crowd for some ratings winning action footage, and as a result stir things up even further as the media hounds in the crowd is encouraged to get even more boisterous and animated to oblige the vid cams that will get them their moment of fame on national/worldwide news.

I really can't see how the police can separate individuals from a crowd that has taken on the mentality of a unified body wanting to protect itself as an autonomous entity, so I don't think folks wanting the police to do just that are being realistic about it.

One would think that protesting in the dark of night is risky business considering how the ones who want to hide in a crowd to commit crimes would prefer the cover of darkness and would therefore be out in force at that time.

So in that sense, if one chooses to protest under those conditions, they should also be willing to accept the dire circumstances that go along with that choice.

IDK, maybe I'm being too distant and logical to form an appropriate opinion on this matter, but it seems to me if you want to participate in a protest, you can't expect the police to treat you as an individual AND enjoy the security that a crowd of like minded folks provide for you at the same time, especially when the malicious ones in your crowd are using that security against you.

Here you go,..

Criminal organizations are decapitating people - NSFW https://www.google.com/search?q=mexi...sm=93&ie=UTF-8 NSFW

Terrorists are strapping on body armor and firing off heavy arms while charging into city hall with explosives - http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/06/justic...html?hpt=hp_t1

And, I am not advocating anything you cooked up. I am all for being prepared and ready for when something terrible will happen,.. like in the above links.

Your links are broken. What the hell is the decapitation link? Are they donning military body armor to decapitate people? Why not shoot the decapitator with a pistol? They have a fucking KNIFE. The CNN link is broken. Why?

Police are slowly becoming more militaristic because they realize at some point, if sh*t hits the fan and society as a whole goes down the crapper, that a lot of us have guns and would use them if we had to.

It's obviously not for peaceful protests or even for people throwing rocks and Molotov's. They have teargas for stuff like that. It's meant to squash full out rebellions.
You just said a mouthful!! Well said!!

Criminal organizations are decapitating people. Terrorists are strapping on body armor and firing off heavy arms while charging into city hall with explosives. Bombs are being made out of house hold items. The bad guys aren't playing by any rules - but, do have a goal of causing as much damage and death as possible.

And, people expect the police to trot around in segways and glocks?

The police should have access to military grade gear - for their own protection, since they live longer to protect us - when faced with threat noted in the 1st paragraph. If it means they have to wear heavy armor from the get go,.. so be it.

I live in a city of millions of people. And, I rarely see the NYPD decked out in military gear. I am not sure how a few pictures, from extreme situations, suddenly mean police are bearing down on us all.

Please, let us be realistic about what we expect from cops. Because the alternative - which I have yet to see a viable one - is just not there.
Let us be realistic......cops are suppose to serve and protect.....

All these examples you sight are the exception........
Just because one person purchases body armor and has weapons to decides to assault City hall does not set a precedent for all Police Departments to have all this mikitary equipment...which you are I both know is leading towards arming the very people who are sworn to serve and protect us and slowly changing our country into a Police State...

BoberFett, Newell Steamer, TexasHiker, Genx87, please all listen up: We allow a TON of bad manners to pass by in P&N because we, and by 'we" I mean I, understand how politics inflames posters, and because the majority of you seem to want it that way, but . . .

Everything has its limits. Generally, the mods and admins are of the mind to crack down hard on you all, take out the "trash," and let the chips fall where they may.

P&N kids, don't make me turn this car around!

As with everything Obama says, one should take it with a grain of salt. It's not what he says that matters, it's what he actually does.

Obama is a Statist/Corporatist; I suspect he will do absolutely nothing to stem the militarization of the police. I hope to be pleasantly surprised by being wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

Why are you calling me out? And why this thread?

This has been a pretty reasonable thread by most standards.

If someone is reporting post, it is not because we did anything wrong, it is because the person reporting the post has a personal grudge.

Just so you know for the future, bolded and signed mod comments are not to be responded to in open forum. The sole legitimate venue is Mod Discussions. But I will say this: You were (a small) part of a general outbreak of posts that contained nothing but personal attacks. We let so much go, but enough can be enough. Consider yourself warned!

And . . . fyi, the reporting member was not involved, has no grudge against any of you that I know of, and did not point to you or your post anyway.

What happened in Boston six years ago?

"Or" is an important operator.

People have been against the militarization of the police for a very long time now. It's one of the primary complaints against the war on drugs.

They've been pretty quiet about it up until now. I predict that people will forget their moral outrage about it before any progress of note is achieved, probably before the offending incident is legally resolved.

Kinda like gun control.

After a shooting anti-gun liberals demand new gun laws.

A few months later everything is back to normal.
