diamond experts...need help verifying how good this is

about 6 years ago i bought a diamond ring for 2K without knowing much about diamonds. i was cleaning up some old folders and came across my certificate of authenticity card. can someone tell me if this was a good deal?

shape: 3 round brilliant
weight: approx. .96 carat t.w.
color: E-F (colorless)
clarity: SI1-SI-2
Polish/Symmetry: Very Good
insurance replacement: $4,050.

Bluenile shows a diamond with your same characteristics retailing for around 4k. Which group certified the diamond?

GGL are a third rate grading firm, and that's not a single diamond, it's three rounds totaling to .96 carat. I bet that stones are more like an H/I I1 with a bad cut. Not a terrible deal but there's no resale there.

The Four C's of diamonds 😉

Sample of a certificate.

Your insurance replacement value is inflated based on that clarity, cut and TW. It's worth around $1500 set in a plain gold band.

That's awful clarity.

Clarity is overrated, as long as it's eye clean.

I got a SI1 stone, but amazingly it was only 1 teeny 'S' shape far far off the corner. I asked the Bluenile gemist to have it checked (salaried and independent, unlike sleazy retail sellers). He said it was a great stone and perfectly eye clean.

I saved about $1200 by getting that SI1, and spent that budget towards cut and carat. Compare that to my friend who got Vs1, which makes no difference in real world, but ended up much smaller carat. (we spent about the same).

I think a sweet spot is Excellent Cut (don't sacrifice here), Eye-clean SI1, and H color for 1.5 carat and up. You can even get away with I color if stone is smaller.

Diamonds are overrated period, but we're talking about if SE got a "good deal", and clarity does affect the price of a diamond (as you admitted).

SE, wholesale...less than $1K but with the insurance certificate you might find an individual that'll give you more than you paid.

Sis owns 2 jewelry stores. Wife wanted a 3 ring set for last Christmas. Retail $1k...wholesale $256.

Again, if we're going that route, of course no sane guys will deny diamonds are worthless crap.

I wasn't talking about SE's diamond. I was just making a general 'buyer's guide' statement.

thanks guys, now i feel like i got ripped off. 🙁

ah well, its been 6 years and who cares. neither of us knew anything about diamonds and just bought based on the info we had at the time. she seems to be pretty happy about it still

Unless you had planned to sell it, that's all that matters really.

Next time buy from Bluenile. Zero sleaziness as they move stones by big quantity. Their agents/certified gem specialists are super helpful (I can be on the phone for an hour with them), who are salaried (not commission), and provide independent facts.

No brick & mortar stores will ever match them, even the Diamond District in NYC (I thought they were sleazier than malls).

Did you get a blow job?

That is why we buy diamonds, so the question is, did the quality of the blow job make it worth the grand you spent? Beyond that, there is really no value.

I didn't.. my fiance was too busy crying.. I'd like to think it's joy not the hopelessness she has gotten herself into.

Keep in mind that diamonds fell in price slightly over the past decade. What you paid 6 years ago is probably more than what you would pay today.
