Diablo 3 coming to consoles....

I heard a rumor about this months ago but Blizz was very hush hush.

The original Diablo was later ported to the PS1 but didn't do so well. I'm sure it'll be better this time around but I would buy it for the PC over a console methinks.

Oh, and not to be a snob but there's a thread with this exact same title that was made back in November by Queasy.

That said, I wonder how they'll implement multiplayer? I suppose just over XBL but I suppose that remains to be seen...

Diablo is not a complicated game. Torchlight is coming as well as numerous previous dungeon crawlers. I don't see why it couldn't work.

If this does happen I'll probably buy both the PC and console version. I played D2 for years and will definitely be buying D3 on PC. But I would love to be able to play the game with friends on Live as well. I have some friends that would never buy it for the PC, but I think they would enjoy the game. Don't if there's any cross platform play or not because I'll likely play with different groups of people on either platform anyway.

You say that but when you find your Windforce on your PS3 account and don't have it on the others you'll be a sad panda! :ninja:

Well, being able to use the same character or transfer gear would be convenient, but I'll likely be using different characters even with cross platform play. The reason being that I'll likely advance at different rates on each platform and I wouldn't want my friends to lose interest if I advanced too far ahead of them.

Ew. Hope they don't consolize it to the extreme

Well, they've already done things like simplified the inventory and changed leveling as well as segregated PvP to arena combat. They did this well in advance of any console version, but now we'll get to hear PC gamers whine and cry about how it's due to consoles. Yay!

Blizzard isn't known for making games that push the hardware a lot. A console port shouldn't affect the PC version of the game at all in terms of graphics or controls.

Diablo is a simple, arcade-esque game anyway.

Yeah, this isn't an RTS like StarCraft where you have to come up with elaborate ways of painting multiple units with a controller. All it is is point and click. Can use a combination of the triggers and buttons to manage inventory and spells.

Blizzard is still denying that these job postings mean that they are developing a console version of Diablo 3 btw. They continue to say that these are only jobs meant to look at possibilities.

Depending on the success that Torchlight has, I think it is likely.

One way or the other though, I would expect the PC version to be released at least 6 months before the console version.

I have a hard time seeing this working if they segregate console players and PC players, I mean people play Diablo very similarly to an MMO as it is, and I think part of that experience is a unified player base.

Further, given the fact that Diablo 2 basically revolved around who had the best, rarest, most perfect items, I think disparity between player bases would be a real issue for a lot of people. Without enough people playing on the consoles, hard to find items would essentially become unobtainable. And if there's any hint of one platform getting higher drop rates or higher xp rates or anything to account for that disparity, I think people would flip.

well it's already influenced pvp with the arena bullshit. hope it doesn't suck

No it hasn't, most people don't like PvP. Open pvp ruined the first game, it's just not popular or liked. Diablo is not designed to be a PvP game, never was and never will be.

why are you such a moron dude. are you just trolling or what?

PvP players are a minority, and not just in Diablo. Don't know why you think otherwise.

pvp is the reason people still play the game today. of course the system was not perfect in diablo 2, but it has ALWAYS been a huge part of the game. In most popular games today, it's multiplayer, not co-op, that keeps people playing. It's the same for d2.

Eh, I wouldn't say that. I never touched PVP in D2 and had loads of fun co-oping with my friends. It was funner than single player for me. That's not to say PVP isn't a big deal like Malak is implying, as a lot of the public rooms I join usually have a lot of people asking to PVP.

Two different parts of the games for two different types of gamers. I don't think one needs to outweigh the other.

Haha.. this is exactly what I was talking about in one of my posts above. They made this change well in advance of even deciding to do a console version (which still isn't confirmed), yet as the console version looks more and more likely we'll start to see more and more PC gamers pin anything "wrong" or different on the console version. It's as predictable as the sun rising even if there's foundation to the claims. BTW, this almost certainly comes from Blizzard's experience with arena combat in WoW and has nothing to do with consoles.

That said, I personally don't like the change. I don't care for PvP in games like Diablo where gear, levels, and unintended exploits like de-syncing are more important than actual skill, but I enjoyed the threat of being assassinated. Maybe that sounds crazy, but it added to the atmosphere of the game IMO.

idk what's with the sudden "news" of blizzard hiring people for console, but there were diablo listings for console/port jobs months ago, around the time arena was announced, possibly before.

just searched quickly, http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/31551/New_Blizzard_Ads_Seeking_Diablo_III_Console_Devs.php
And you can bet that they were thinking about console a lot earlier than that

arena sure seems consolized to me, but maybe the developers really think it's the best solution to diablo 2's pvp problems. idk. I'll obviously withhold judgement until trying it, though I wish the system was a bit more like d2

Interesting. Was going to get this for the PC, but not so sure if it does come out for the 360. We'll see.
