Diablo 3 coming to consoles....

Interesting. Was going to get this for the PC, but not so sure if it does come out for the 360. We'll see.

The biggest problem will be getting Microsoft and Blizzard to come to some sort of agreement over the use of Blizzard.net. Sony has shown a willingness to open up to Valve's Steam. Microsoft is going to have to show the same kind of thing.

idk what's with the sudden "news" of blizzard hiring people for console, but there were diablo listings for console/port jobs months ago, around the time arena was announced, possibly before.

just searched quickly, http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/31551/New_Blizzard_Ads_Seeking_Diablo_III_Console_Devs.php
And you can bet that they were thinking about console a lot earlier than that

arena sure seems consolized to me, but maybe the developers really think it's the best solution to diablo 2's pvp problems. idk. I'll obviously withhold judgement until trying it, though I wish the system was a bit more like d2

There's been rumors for a while, but nothing concrete. And your article is just from this last November. They showed working arena combat at the last Blizzcon, so they've been working on it for a while and certainly long before your reference.

Like I said, this was entirely predictable. When they revealed the arena combat a while back everyone was saying it's a carry over from WoW, which is probably is, but now that it appears a console version will happen I KNEW many PC gamers would switch the blame to consoles. You guys blame anything and everything wrong with PC gaming on consoles. It's amusing.

us guys? if you think they decided on arena before they considered consoles, you're likely wrong. whatever lol...

I'm not. And what about arena PvP makes you think of consoles anyway? What's the logic behind that? You going to blame the simplified inventory (e.g. non-Tetris) on consoles too?

Technically they may not have decided on consoles yet at all. There is no point to having open PvP in Diablo, the game isn't designed for it. Arena pvp makes sense.

All of the simplifications of inventory, skill trees, and gameplay definitely comes from WoW, not consolization.

However, if there does end up being a console version, it is obviously not a spontaneous thing, which would hint that at least small design decisions were effected on the PC version.

I would guess it would mostly come into gameplay. People keep saying Diablo would be easy to do on console, but I don't see the fast paced D2 style working well on the limited consoles, and the same thing goes for inventory and stat/skill selection. Almost all multiplat RPGs have had terrible examples of one or perhaps both (dragon age, mass effect, oblivion, etc)

Arena pvp is boring, casualized, and uninspired.

Also D2 not being about PvP? Are you serious?! PvP was a huge part of D2, and many people's only reason for playing.

No it hasn't, most people don't like PvP. Open pvp ruined the first game, it's just not popular or liked. Diablo is not designed to be a PvP game, never was and never will be.

I agree that PvP sucked in D and D2.
There was always some hugely overpowered guy that would kill everyone with a hammer, whirlwind, etc... whatever the latest unnerfed build was.

pvp is the reason people still play the game today. of course the system was not perfect in diablo 2, but it has ALWAYS been a huge part of the game. In most popular games today, it's multiplayer, not co-op, that keeps people playing. It's the same for d2.

I dunno about that. D2 is my most played game ever (thousands and thousands of hours I'm sure) and while I enjoyed PvP every once in a while, I bet I spent 90%+ of my time in PvM.

Methinks you mean Battle.net, but yeah. I think Sony might go for it but I'm not so sure about M$. They'd probably try to force Blizz to port it for use only on XBL, and if Sony agreed to work with Blizz it'd be a major feather in their cap.

D2s PVP was crap, it was all grief dueling, was fucking stupid. i played that game for what seems like forever, i think i PVPed once and that was only after a ladder reset when them move chars off the ladder servers which no one played on.

hell PvP consisted mostly of TPPKing people for years

PvP back before 1.10 was MUCH better (before synergies, overpowered runewords, uber charms, etc).

Hmm, I have mixed feelings on this. If you look at the controls for Diablo 2, it becomes abundantly clear that it would be an easy game to port, you really don't need to do much in the game other than point and click. And if I assume Diablo 3 is identical in all ways, then I see no reason not to port it to every console ever.

However, I think there was a side of me that was hoping they would grow the gameplay a bit for Diablo 3. For instance, D1 and D2 have a lot of spells that really don't matter much. I was hoping for a lot more variation not only in spell/skill but also in how the spell/skill is used. What I'm talking about is mouse gestures, clicking, better control of the character. As a console game, the likelihood of this happening is probably a lot slimmer, but I certainly feel it could have made the game play feel much deeper.

I wonder if communities will be segmented?

I doubt there will be anything revolutionary in terms of control/character movement. but there are variations in the spells through the use of runes(is there another name for them in d3, I can't remember?). but further than that, I think we can expect a bit more, not sure what to call it, but skills similar to some of the assassin skills(I never played an assassin so idk which) but skills that build up power in tiers or shit like that, which change the varios effect of skills. I believe the monk has a bunch of skills like that. I don't know if that made any sense, I did a poor job explaining

PS3 natively supports mouse and keyboard, but any RPG that has been ported to it has never used this. Maybe Diablo can be the first.

Diablo 3 coming to consoles....

,.... as an end of life cycle title for the PS4, Wii2 and XBox 720.

1st Blizzard needs to actually release the game on the PC platform - which won't happen until 2015. Yeah, I know; "Blizzard is always late" comments are so annoying - but, so is being shown a game that won't be released anytime soon.
