WASHINGTON (Reuters Life!) – Up to a third of U.S. adults could have diabetes by 2050 if Americans continue to gain weight and avoid exercise, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projected on Friday.

The numbers are certain to go up as the population gets older, but they will accelerate even more unless Americans change their behavior, the CDC said.

"We project that, over the next 40 years, the prevalence of total diabetes (diagnosed and undiagnosed) in the United States will increase from its current level of about one in 10 adults to between one in five and one in three adults in 2050," the CDC's James Boyle and colleagues wrote in their report.

Well, with HFCS in just about everything, I'm not surprised.

I want to know what percentage of normal weight people get diabeetus. Anyone?

I was just coming in here to comment on the "fat vs skinny" comments in here thus far.

While not "statistics", I know 7 people that have diabetes. I'd say 5 of them are of "normal weight". The other 2 are fatties.

Why should any of this be such a big surprise. Americans eat too much and exercise too little. I doubt that many people who read this article will change their lifestyle habits.

I always get a laugh from users within this forum bragging about the crap that they like to eat (fast food, etc.). If it weren't for the fact that some of my tax dollars go towards taking care of people who don't have enough respect for themselves to actually take care of themselves ... I doubt I would care.

which are born with it and which are the fatty versions
Diabetes Mellitus, which is the most often talked about form, is split into Type 1, which is probably autoimmune in origin, or Type 2, which is insulin-resistance diabetes mellitus. There are, of course, other types of diabetes.

Did is why it is critical we get rid of/stop socialized medicine. I don't want to pay for you fat fuckers.

Leadership 101 lesson I learned in the military: You can't have responsibility without authority.

The govt should not be subsidizing lifelong diabetes meds for people that it can't force to get off the couch, exercise, and eat a balanced diet.

LOL, the true blame should be placed squarely on the fatties themselves. The only ones who can somewhat blame anyone or anything besides themselves are fat kids who don't know any better and have worthless parents who keep taking them to McDonalds and letting them sit on their ass watching TV all day so by the time they are teenagers they are already morbidly obese. For all others: Personal responsibility = GET SOME. If you're becoming obese take your ass to the gym and stop feeding yourself crap.

Unfortunately, personal responsibility seems to be a thing of the past. If it becomes an epidemic, perhaps we should create a "fatty police" much like Saudia Arabia has "religious police." If they see a fat bastard wolfing down a big mac at the local mall, they confiscate their food, give it to the homeless, and fine the fatty with a fat tax to pay for their higher health care costs in the future😛 If they become belligerent, they are within their rights to club them in the belly to make them puke up their unauthorized meal. Sadly, that might be the only way to make fatties stop eating fattening foods...at least in public anyway😛
