That sounds like a power supply problem to me.

edit: Assuming you didn't totally screw up Windows, in your attempts at overclocking.

notihng was wrong with windows... well.. it took a few mins for the computer to recongnize the keyboard and mouse... and xp not recongnizing my grapics card... guess its a lil too old.. =p

but yea... my power supply? it was just a minor increase for voltage...
so i guess its this motherboard thats a pain?? or the cpu? or both? =p

Sure, low voltage is the fastest way to kill comonents, except for voltage spikes, and magnets. What power supply do you have in that system?

edit: Oops, if it's still the 580 watt Hiper, it's not likely the psu. You should still download SpeedFan, and find out what your temps and voltages are, though.

Your +12v should be as close to 12v as possible, but not lower than ~11.6v, your +5v should be 5v, but not lower than ~4.8v, your 3.3v should be 3.3v, but not lower than ~3.1v. And your cpu temp (Temp 1 in SpeedFan) should be 30C-40C @ idle, and 50C or less while running Orthos small FFT's. << at stock speeds

would the opty 185 be "easier" to overclock on an ASUS board compared to the DFI or will there be no difference

Running it with the jumper in the clear CMOS position can and will damage the motherboard.

I never ever heard of that.
I'm not sure how common it is, but I've read it in a few mobo manuals.

How could it not damage the motherboard? That jumper only exists to create a direct short between the + and the - portions of the part of the motherboard that supplies the CMOS with power. Direct shorts are bad for electrical/electronic devices.:D A few of the high performance motherboard manufacturers, the ones that actually provide documentation with their boards, like DFI & MSI, usually mention it somewhere in their manuals.
