The U.N. is supposedly going to step in and pay these folks' water bills. I'll believe it when I see it, but it would be nice to get some of our own back.

The UN involvement is for publicity only.

The UN actually gets involved, they are not going to write a check but try to put political pressure on the Detroit government to ease off.

Yeah, the U.N. gets money FROM us, they dont give money TO us.

Received a notice from my local government asking to please DO NOT SEND any payment.

Apparently, there is a massive credit on the bill.

I always just send $150 every month regarding of what the bill is; never see the actual bill.

In New Orleans, there were plenty of people absuing the system, similar to what you are saying.

Word got out that if you paid JUST the water part of your bill, the utility company could not shut off your water.

For perspective, here is how a water bill would look like for a normal month for two people:

Water: ~ $3
Sewage: ~$10
Trash: ~$24
Water/Sewage/Drainage Fees: ~$25

So the news was reporting that a LOT of people (including politicians) were just paying that $3 portion of their bill, knowing nothing could happen to them.
