Forums are dragging for me.
It has no impact on the forums, nothing is loaded unless you follow a link. If you're having any issues, then it's something that's happening regardless of DynamiteData.

As I tried to load pages I noticed the status bar was attempting to load various pages. Ads (the old forum ads) are not an issue. However, the issue has seem to fix itself.

I find it ironic that everyone here wants to defeat the source of income of this place. I mean, this site isn't free to operate and you don't pay a fee to be here. What does it hurt for a banner to be shown or a referral link to be used?

They can restart offering premium subscriptions and limit access to various parts of the site for those that don't pay?
As I understand it, the subscription system was an administrative nightmare, and is not something they're keen to repeat.

Okie dokie. I'd personally prefer non-seizure inducing ads to referrer/redirects. Granted I know ads can be used maliciously, but having to walk through some unknown website that does god-knows-what with my browser through the clickthru... well let's just say I'll be sure that I will be maintaining said greasemonkey script for the near future.

It really is a shame though, I'm not trying to take money out of the site's hands... I'm trying to keep the rest of my wallet safe. I wish there were some other option with this wonderful internet where you don't have to keep worrying if you're one click away from a scam or not.
I'm not sure why you'd have anything to worry about with DynamiteData links, there's no more chance of malice there than here. Looking at the source, they're just META refreshes, and I'm sure Kris can confirm it.

Yep - just META refreshes. We actually strip the link completely down to its bare guts, then append Anand's referal tags back on it. This has the added benefit of removing 3rd party ref tags transparently.
The latter bit is of interest for those of us on the moderating side. It blocks all referral spam (we get a lot of that for Amazon) without us needing to mess with text filters.

If we've got this referral system now, would it be possible to get rid of the fucking animated ads and just use static banners? Animated ads are a tremendous pain in the ass when reading text.

While that may be true now, doesn't mean it won't change without notice in the future, just like this whole thing popped up in the first place without warning.

I'm sure you'll understand when I say I'm personally going to err on the side of caution with this one.

Well not exactly. At least not as I understand it and not as it has been implemented so far. It only blocks referral spam links from those sites with which AnandTech has a referral relationship. All others are not affected and their links will still need to be checked as usual.

That's correct. I know what I meant, although clearly that's not what I wrote.😛

I agree. Referrals get such a bad name from the free ipod guys that people forget they have a valid purpose sometimes .... like keeping the lights on at AT! :light:

If I see a good deal on a banner ad Ill click on for convenience sake. Ive also bought several things throughout the years from AT referals just because the deal was that good.

My dynamitedata pages haven't been redirecting me very well today. Didn't notice any real slowness until tonight. Wasn't sure where else to post this. Did the basic browser troubleshooting and no-go. Got a link right now that won't redirect and gets stuck on a blank dynamitedata page.

No.

Half the time these 'modded' links are VERY slow, or don't work at all !!!!

Another great move.......

This is just sad.
PLEASE remove the Dynamite Data stuff, it's just hurting us.

the fucking dynamite media shit is down again, causing none of the links to work. this shit is so stupid. is AT going to make us pay for a subscription w/o this advertising shit? if this keeps up i see a lot of At members move over to other forums such as overclock.net and xtremesystems.org. they have a much larger user base and provide much quicker advice than AT anyway.

Instead of appending ref=anandtech.com to newegg links (which I wouldn't mind in the least) you are going with a redirect referral service? That's inane.

Not working atm. Hangs for a long time and then gives a completely blank page. Tried it with wget and it's timing out.

This is rather pitiful if you ask me, does nobody over there know how to run a proper load balanced web site? There's absolutely no reason for something so simple as this to not work as often as it doesn't.

I was just trying to load a video article and it totally hung up on the detonator.dynamitedata etc. Googled it and found this link! Haha. Anyway, it still seems to be causing slowdowns.

At least leave a trap door? Click on the link, go through detonator IF they're ever working. Copy and paste the TEXT of the link, be free from this ghastly system.

Or we could all do the usual version of anti-spam email, post links in text using " colon " and people use " at " for human-readable but not machine-readable email addresses.

This sucks, and I too will drift away if it isn't fixed.

Sadly, I'm pitching it again for those that may have missed it above.

Use Firefox, install the Greasemonkey plugin for it, download and install this script that I wrote. All URL's are then stripped and re-written without any of the DynamiteData crap... in their raw unadulterated form.
