Destiny impressions

Sorry... I know we're already talking about it in the PS4 thread, but I don't want to flood that with just Destiny stuff. I thought we had a dedicated Destiny thread to bump but I couldn't find one.

Anyway, I played quite a bit and it's a pretty stable alpha. I don't remember signing up for anything and got an invite anyway, so it seems like they're definitely going balls out in testing their servers. Bungie obviously has experience with high volume multiplayer, but it's good to see either way.

The mechanics seem pretty solid, and I like what I see. Though it seems like missions may be designed to be overly difficult, forcing sometime in your team to stay alive so everybody can respawn. I'm not sure how I feel about such a thing in PvE. Maybe my group just sucked though... I died a lot :whiste:

edit: removed the "alpha" since that's over, and the beta people will probably want to chat next (if it's allowed)

The strike missions are difficult because of the rewards associated with them and their requirement for teamwork. The regular story missions can be done solo easily.

Madbro it's not on Bone. Between not getting the alpha AND getting the beta late, there will be much hurt in my butt for the next few months, as I decide if I want this game or not.

It's solid. Mind blowing it is this stable then you realize it is already months late.

It be nice to keep my levels and gear, but no biggie. Hopefully beta you can keep what you earn.

In most (ok, all) games I've ever tested, what you did during testing is erased when the games goes live, simply because there's no way to know if anything you got was because of something they were testing or something that was bugged, or something that was radically changed during testing.

I'm into MMORPG games, I was watching a live stream of a CTF match and it looks pretty fun, reminds me of other MMORPG PVP matches.

I'm not pre-ordering it just to get into beta, I can wait. :p

To those who have played, is Destiny fun to play solo at all?

Are you required to have team mates to beat most missions?

Is there any split screen co-op?

Yes, you can play solo and just complete mission after mission.

There are 3 PVE drop types

Story can be solo'd
Free roam with never ending missions. Also solo
And Strikes with require at least 3 people. Don't worry about having to know 3 people. You automatically get grouped when the mission starts.

I don't think so on split screen.

Is it fun? Yes. Not super fun like Diablo getting DP'd by Halo and Fallout 3. But Diablo is at least sucking off Fallout 3 while Halo gets her from behind.

Its a very good alpha one of the best in terms of stability. It is also a lot of fun to play. While the never ending mission do get a bit boring, you don't get that much xp when you level up. Strike missions put you with others so it's fine in that aspect.

There is only one story mission in the alpha. I agree that it is sort of team based. I mean it's more fun to run around with another team mate otherwise it feels kind of vast and lonely.

The map is huge for an alpha game too. You can ride all around it with your vehicle and discover all the areas. I didn't figure out how you open the map to see the whole area.

I had a lot of fun with it since I ran through two characters and got some decent gear too. I'll be buying it when it's out so I pre ordered to get in the beta and registered for it today.

My buddy is also getting it and neither of use knew anything about it or were interested in it before the alpha. We stayed up quite late playing it yesterday.

There is a ton to do in each area and in the tower too.

I have such a hard time getting into FPS console games. I tried it out for a couple hours but it didn't seem like anything special.

I think the story would be fun in the full version playing by yourself. There's no requirement to play the story with other people, but it's fun if you can.

Solo is still fun because you see random people out in the world. Sometimes you get a public event where everyone in the area can help take down the objective even if they aren't on the same fireteam. Afterwards they can go their separate ways again. One event has a Noble Devil Walker drop in which is like a giant spider tank. There was 5 people in the area. I was solo and I assume the others were on two teams since they stuck together in pairs of two. Anyway we all helped take it down and the waves of other enemies that came as well trying to protect the walker. It took a little more than 5 minutes but was a very fun event.

It is probably the best FPS I've played in years because of the openness of it all and how fun the events are to do. Even when you do the story mission, it's not linear. You still get a big area to wander around and check for loot and enemies that drop cryptids which are unknown weapon or armor drops you take to an NPC to decode and thus unlock for your use. Also in the story missions you can even meet up with people as you go along. It makes the world feel alive that way IMO.

The co-op is all online, no split screen.

Has anybody found a quick way to take down that spider tank? It was pretty ridiculous the amount of damage that thing took. I had to let myself die just to get some ammo to keep at it. We eventually got there but it just seemed like there was a better way we were missing.

Go for the legs. Also when he kneels down it exposes some circuitry where if you shoot in that spot it does 114 damage. Sad the alpha is over soon, wanted to keep playing.

I took part in some public events yesterday and it was pretty fun.

A few tips.

1) Bring extra ammo. The merchant that sells weapons in the Tower also sells ammo packs. You should always have these. To use them you go to your inventory and select it. Each one will refill your ammo to full. You need to buy standard, special, and heavy ammo separately.

2) The legs are the weak spot. When you do sufficient damage to the legs the walker will fall to the ground and a spot will be exposed just behind the head area. Blast this with your heaviest guns if you can.

Yeah, we went for the legs and got the weak spot it just took a while. I didn't know how those ammo packs worked so that's good to know

Every so often, mobs around the spider spawn. Kill those from the sides and run across.

I've survived a strike with 0 deaths a few times and still not got the bounty.

Also, revive people, revive. I played last night with a group who wouldn't revive and we wiped. You respawn with basically no ammo.

I think your whole team has to survive with no death for that one. That's what people have said elsewhere.

I played the alpha last night, and ugh... it just reminds me how bad I am at console shooters. :( I also found out the hard way that the game is not paused just because you're on the options screen. I kept hearing all these noises like I was taking damage, and I realized, "Wait a minute... I am taking damage!" I rush back to find out that a bunch of things that I already killed appeared to have respawned. It had only been 3-5 minutes, which seemed a bit quick to me... especially since they also respawned as a pack. Unfortunately, I couldn't do anything as I was dead right when I got back into the game.

My frustrations with the controls really started to flare up when I was fighting against that dumb Warlock. I was running out of bullets because he would just go hide around something and his shield would recharge in a second. I got so annoyed and was running out of bullets, so I killed him with my special in what seemed like less than a second. :$

The controls are actually really good, just like any type of game, just play more to get used to it.

I got some blue gear but all level 10+. I wish the Alpha would just turn into the beta, now. Increase the level cap to 20 or so.
