Most science and engineering programs at UBC are extremely inflexible. Most core courses are set and there is little room for electives, even at First Year. The only requirement for First Year (freshman) Science majors is 6 credits of English. And I believe that Engineers don't even need to take English to graduate.
Where I go (RIT), we take a lot of liberal arts, and I'm in engineering. Everyone at the school is required to take:
English Writing and Literature I and II
3 courses in the Humanites(one in Fine Arts, one in History, and one in History Philosophy)
2 courses from Political Science
Plus, either a concentration (3 additional upper level courses), or a minor (5 additional upper level courses)
And a Senior Seminar course before graduation.
All of that is required for every student at RIT to graduate. Not saying anything against you, just showing that every school is different.
