Hello,

This computer has been working fine but today, I decided to run some windows update. Upon shutting down and reopening, the computer turns on but no monitor! I do not see the keyboard lights going on either.

The GPU fan runs at full speed but it always did that after I installed truecrypt (after I enter the password, the gpu fan goes back to normal speed) so I'm not sure if this is an indicator of any sorts.

I made sure everything was plugged in, took the motherboard battery in and out, but still does not work.

After opening and shutting down the computer a bunch of times, nothing works. SOMETIMES, when the computer starts, the gpu fan goes at normal speed but still no monitor signal.

Any help?

I would suggest trying it after disconnecting any USB devices (except keyboard), all hard drives, optical drive and see if anything changes.

If you have on-board video as an option, remove the video card from the equation.

Next step would be to remove the RAM and test just one stick at a time.

Power supply could be failing as well, if you have another I would try swapping it.

i took out the gpu and ran it and i get no monitor.

i took out the hds and still the same problem

I then took out the hd and ram and still nothing on the monitor (is there suppose to be with these components removed?)

so im left with the processor, mobo, and psu.

Since computer powers on, doesnt that mean the psu should still be working, unless a faulty psu can still power on a computer? Does it sound like the mobo is at fault?

Please give us all the specs you can on the conputer. Any recent hardware changes/ additions?

Also, if you haven't already, do a cmos reset.

Did you hear any beeeps with the RAM out?

If you did not, you may want to hook up/get a speaker for your board. That will help determine what stage it's getting stuck at.

I reset the cmos and nothing.

Its strange because when I try to put in a different psu (known working) , the processor and psu fan spin only for 1 second and then everything stops.

I tested the original psu into my sisters computer and it worked fine which leads me to assume its the motherboard. (or the ram..)

Quick question, if I just want to see if i get past post, do I need to put in ram? what would happen if I dont.

It almost sounds like something you downloaded and installed flashed an unsccessful firmware update or change to one of your chipsets.

Do you have another known-working monitor or can you borrow one and swap it in just to eliminate the remote possibility that your monitor died?

The spin-up for one second and immediately back down indicates a short, so make sure all the motherboard mounting screws are secure.

Good time to swap power and vga cables as well. There should be nothing else plugged into the computer right now.

The computer will not boot without RAM, CPU, and all necessary power connections.
