hehehe,

i put my switch BEFORE the router and my VOIP get's it's own Comcast External IP address. 🙂 yes, i'm special.

i figure it will be less down time as the router can go down but my VOIP would still work.

Makes sense. I don't know if I could get a second IP from my ISP, but I've got enough UPS' in the computer room to give me a while on the phone. And I got a cellphone.

i'm sure your question is not serious, a joke of some kind, but yes, there is Comcast High Speed internet access and Comcast Professional.

Comcast Pro gives you additional bandwidth 512 kb/s up 5 mb/s down and 4 IP address with TTL of 180 days (6 months, pretty much static).

Cox Communications -> Apartment complex switches -> Dorm room -> Netgear 4 port 10/100 hub - mine & roomate's computer..

I had a router but i tried to do a firmware upgrade and fried it.

DI-704P connecting two PCs via 10/100 (DHCP off); one of the two PCs is the dial-up server 🙁. Router also connects the brother laser via LPT print server. DI-614+ wireless lets a 3rd pc and the Toshiba Pocket PC get networked.

Wireless broadband 802.11B (500/500) into D-Link 713P. Wired feeds to two desktop computers and one replayTV server. Wireless goes to two Linksys WET11 wireless bridges. One connects to ReplayTV/XBox/MP3 server through a D link 10/100 switch, other to my Playstation2 and second ReplayTV with a netgear 10/100 switch. Wireless is also used to connect my laptop to the network.

Also there is a standard 56K modem connected to Router for backup line.

Motorola Cable Modem
Linksys Router
Linksys Switch
Linksys Wireless AP

1 Server
4 Desktops
1 HTPC
1 Laptop
1 PDA
1 XBox
1 Playstation2

"No name" ADSL modem / router box -> G/f's PC via Belkin USB NIC, also -> my Beast via 100mbps onboard NIC, finally also -> Celery 400 Win2k 384Mb RAM server machine. One spare port 🙂

Server running xp pro linked to second seti machine and laptop running 98 via net-lynx mini switch using cat 5 cabling. Internet sharing not needed as I run seti queue and i couldnt get it working 😉

why do some of you guys have a hub, router and switch? why not just use the router?

Because we ran out of wired ports available on the router or wireless bridge......so we needed to add a switch.

cable modem -> nic #1 on openbsd router

nic #2 on openbsd router -> 5 port switch -> to a few of my computers -> 5 port hub -> to family computers
