When I was a teenager I joined FDR's old CCC (I think its called Job Corps or something lame/militaristic like that now) Lived on a ancient WW2 military base and had vocational training by some awesome old Union trainers. All paid for by the gubbermunt. I still use my training day to day to make a extra buck fixing apartments/pouring concrete, laying bricks, electrical work, mechanics, HVAC. IMO kids with real world training makes a more rounded person. I am not active in those Unions anymore but what I learned has served me countless times. When there is something broke my neighborhood knows who they can come to to get things fixed right.
I know the old reasoning was if commies/aliens or something invaded we would have battalions of civilians who could fix hardware and take care of their own if our government was knocked out to continue the fight for the USA.
I also fought forest fires on the front lines and learned to jump from a plane with my gear.
This is still a good idea. Even if we have no major threat it saddens me to see young people who dont know how to do anything useful besides flip burgers/shuffle borrowed Chinese money around in some cubicle.
Personally I would like to see FDR's old Civil Defense dept come back for young people.
The duck and cover videos were silly, but having a trained appointed person to go to on your block who knows what to do in a disaster is one of those things that is not always necessary, but indispensable when needed.
We live under a thin veil of civilized society, things can fall apart much more quick then apathetic Americans nowadays realize. It's good to be prepared.
