Dental Insurance = Retarded

Wow, my dental insurance is taking me to town. Sure, they cover 80% of my costs... with 5 million exceptions. $2500 worth of work is going to end up costing me probably $1200+. This is just for a root canal and fillings. I really hate all the limitations of insurance.

Yeah, but think about that for a second. You almost certainly have not paid $1300 in dental insurance premiums, so in the end it's going to be a good deal for you. Still sucks to have to pay that kind of loot.

sounds like you have normal insurance to me

i guess you could spend a boatload of money for better insurance, but ...

My dental insurance paid for almost half of my braces. I think it costs me about 120 bucks a year in total. I'd say that's a pretty good deal . . .

Not a bad deal. This is how a free market economy works. If you want more, you pay more.

Most folks look at dental insurance like they do home insurance...what ever is the least expensive is what is good for me because I'll never have to use it.

But in OP's scenario, he actually had to use it. And by cheaping out on insurance he had to pay more. If you read closely on insurance policies there are specific terms. If those terms are not agreeable then you are free to reject and find a better product.

I never skimp on insurance of any kind BTW. That's what it is....Insurance.

My experience w/ dental insurance is that overall you spend only a bit more for dental work than you would have if you had no dental insurance. Look at it as a savings account with a negative interest rate.

This is provided through work. I don't have a choice of the plan or an ability to upgrade.

I have the same problem. Best thing to do is shop for a better plan. They are out there.

My company pays for mine (Horizon BCBS), but I agree it still costs quite a bit if you have any real work done.

You are more than welcome to get more insurance, decline the work insurance, etc. The choice is yours. You have complete and total freedom when it comes to insurance.

Not mine...

I pay about $70 a month for my PPO, and its great. I can go pretty much wherever I want, any specialist, with no hassle. In the last 6 months, i've had over $10,000 worth of medical bills as a result of my shoulder injury and various other checkups, and the only thing ive had to pay is a $15 copay here and there. Take my MRI bill for example:

610 MRI General 1873.75
Adjust health assurance; hlth adj -943.64
Paymnt Health Assurance; hlth rcp -915.11
billed charges 1873.75
Receipts to date: 915.11
Adjustments to date: 943.64
Total due: $15.00

Not bad. (aside from the fact that a 30 minute MRI cost almost $2000 to begin with, but thats another story...)

Then it's not retarded, that's just the plan you got. Don't like it? Go out and buy your own, no one FORCED you to accept that plan. You're still having half of the money covered on it anyway. If it's so retarded pay for it all out of your own pocket. Having done benefits and seeing what it costs companies to provide their employees insurance, (no matter how big or small) you see things from a completely different angle. You see it as you getting hosed...hardly the case.

I dont' even bother with dental coverage, over the years I'd pay more than if I didn't have it.

My families dental insurance is $400/year and I get 10 cleanings out of it. So that is not too bad overall.

Dental insurance is great if your teeth are perfect and stay that way, which in that case they cover atleast 1/2 of the incurred expenses...
