A draft of the roughly $80 billion bill, obtained by POLITICO, has a wide range of tax credits and job creation ideas, but it also includes provisions unrelated to jobs, including a reauthorization of the Patriot Act

I can't quite tell is this the transparency? or the hope? or the change? I never expected the patriot act to go away when the democrats got into power, but I really didn't think they would take such a backdoor approach to it.

You think this isn't being done in conjunction with republicans, that its inclusion wasn't requested by republicans? I'm not going to put all the blame on repubs for this, but casting the inclusion of this in the bill as solely a dem idea is probably not accurate.

Yes I had trouble tracking that pronoun as well. It may refer to a republican aid, or might refer to Reid. Reid did vote for the original act and its 2006 renewal. However, the context here is that dems and repubs are hashing out a bi-partisan jobs bill. Any inclusion of this extension was done, at a minimum, with repub approval, and may well have been done at their request, or in order to induce as many of them as possible to vote for the bill. This is almost certainly a shared responsibility of both parties.

The original bill and its extension unfortunately had wide bi-partisan support, though props to 62 House dems and 3 House reps plus Russ Feingold for voting no.

Ok ok I agree that republicans are certainly not free from blame, but this is Reid's puppy, with a democrat controlled congress, and Obama will sign it. If the republicans were in power I don't really doubt that they would do something similar. Government is just broken period dot. But when the "party of no" doesn't support this bill then they will be labeled as "look republicans don't support jobs!" just as if they made a Sunshine and Lollipops bill and burred a bunch of BS pork in it, and the republicans opposed it they would say "look, republicans hate sunshine and lollipops!"
