Been trying 1-2 I'm to the point where I'm just running through straight to the boss. Maybe I'll try grinding a bit for more levels, idk. The boss is one shotting me when I inevitably get lost in the camera angle

1-2 boss never hit me. He is slow, and gives lot of warnings before he attacks

Tip:

When you start out, quickly dash towards one of the sidese. Kill all the archers, then run back down to face the Tower Night. Run between his legs, then hack at his heels while behind him. Watch out, as he can jump back and step on you. But it is pretty easy to dodge.

ok finally picked this game back up. after about a week or two break, I get to the tower knight, and clear the archers. I'm not in the mood to get pissed if I die, so I find a safe corner up top and let the game save and I quit.

Next time I turn the game on, I'm outside the boss fog! awesome. I thought this game saved every 3 seconds and picked up right where you left off? whatever, I beat him, it was fairly easy this time around.

I'm working on 2-1 now. Opened the shortcut elevator without much difficulty which should be helpful.

Seems like I'm getting a hang of the game, but I just don't know how to upgrade my character soul level and equipment. How many points should I spend here, how many should I upgrade so I can use this equipment, what kind of weapon should I get, how to get it, etc etc. I'm a barbarian, around level 20 maybe?

You really shouldn't be getting one shotted... I've never really been one shotted by a boss ever.

NG+ my caster gets one shotted by trash- on the first playthrough every boss that ever hit me could one shot me. Honestly I thought the bosses were fairly easy on my caster overall(outside lurker who was significantly harder then he was on my melee character), but even a momentary lapse of positiong was instant death.

That is up to you entirely. How do you want to play? I played through the game as a close to pure black mage my first time through, wanted to see how the melee side of things went and started what was a Barbarian, but quickly ended up being more of an archer then anything else. Quick thing that taught me, there is nothing resembling balance in this game unforunately, casters suck(their spells are *FAR* too slow to effective on anything outside of bosses unfortunately).

How do you like to play?

Want to charge in and go toe to toe? Stack as much armor/defense as you can with the biggest shield you can manage. Stack Endurance and Vitality along with strength.

Want to kill things as quickly as possible? Stack as much strength with the largest weapon you can find and vitality.

Want to be nimble and 'float like a butterfly sting like a bee'? Get some light leather ish armor and stack dexterity with a fast hitting weapon focusing on parrying whenever possible.

Pick enemies off at range? Strength/Dexterity combo with the best bow you can attain. You'll still want a board and sword of course, and this strat requires you to drop a decent amount of souls on buying arrows/bolts, but it is very effective and IMO by far the best ranged option overall.

Caster? Int and either faith or magic depending on which way you roll, and lots of spice on you at all times(also strongly reccomend mana regen gear whenever possible and the insanity catalyst sucks unless you are using it for pvp/firestorm type setup).

No matter what type of character you are building(outside of pure casters) upgrading your weapons whenever realisticly possible should be a big focus. My current barbarian hits for ~120 with a normal default weapon, hits for 500-700 with some of the upgraded ones(bow is roughly the same percentage increase although not as hard).

thanks, thats some great info. I'm having trouble figuring out what equipment is worth upgrading, mainly weapon. I don't want to be wasting resources on a weapon that isn't worth upgrading. I really have no idea how to pick out whats best. I've been using the wikis to try and find an ideal weapon, but I don't know what the best route is

I am starting to cruise a long a bit, beat 2-1 today without much trouble.

What type of build are you going for and how in depth are you planning on playing the game? If you are going to go after the platinum it is a very different approach then just trying to play through the game once.

If you are focusing on staying light in terms of character tendency, Demonbrandt is probably the most powerful weapon you can reasonably attain somewhat early in the game. You don't have to worry about upgrading it, you won't do anything with it until end game when you combine it with Soulbrandt to make Northern Regalia.

For general useage without any real weaknesses, Large Sword of Searching is good for a first playthrough.

Work on upgrading one of the weapons listed to what is required and then stick with that until you kill the boss to get the required soul to upgrade it(Scimitar to +8 is probably the easiest and most versatile overall out of those). This isn't a very good PVP weapon at all, but for PVE particularly on your first play through it is very effective(and doubles your luck rating in terms of drops which can be handy).

For ranged I'd say Lava Bow hands down for the first play through-

http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/lava-bow

Get any of the bows listed to +7 and as soon as you beat Flame Lurker(2-2 boss) you'll be able to get it(you already killed Armor Spider so you should have his soul). In later play throughs when you starts start getting a lot higher there may be better options, but I honestly don't think anything is close to Lava Bow on your first play through.

For caster weapons the best is the Talisman of Beasts, but that is hard to get. Until you can get that, the plain wooden catalyst is the best overall. The Silver Catalyst gives you more ~20% more MP, but reduces the power of your spells. Wooden Catalyst has damage close to the Insanity Catalyst but doesn't reduce your MP by 50% like the Insanity Catalyst. If you are rolling faith, you are stuck with Talisman of God until you can get the Talisman of Beasts.

For shields what you are going to want to use will change around a lot depending on what you are using. For PVE content, most of the time I use Adjudicators(4-1 behind a red eyed skeleton- be careful with them) as the constant healing effect is handy. For certain areas, 3-1 and 4-2 come to mind, the Dark Silver Shield is very nice(5-3), particularly for melee based players. The Tower Shield is really nice, but insanely heavy making Endurance demands too high to realisticly use on your first playthrough unless you are going for a straight tank(no real rolling at all).

Unless you are going for the platinum trophy, I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading the 'wrong' weapon. The really powerful weapons often can't be upgraded or can only be upgraded using Colourless Demon's souls which are very rare(at which point you should have figued out for yourself what you want the most). Boss souls are only used for one weapon upgrade each, so any upgrade available via a boss soul isn't going to hurt any other upgrade you may want to do. Most of the shard upgrades are more for situational use(outside of Crescent weapons which any heavy caster is always going to want to have, but they don't carry them for the melee).

My suggestion to make the PvE game easier is to specialize. I have a tendency to be come a "jack of all trades" in single player RPGs, getting the skills that look useful. I learned early on that this approach won't work for this game. To be effective in progressing through the game, you need to specialize on one type of character, especially at the very beginning of your first playthrough.

I stuck with a light armor melee guy to dodge, so my stats I increased were strength, stamina, and vitality. After progressing a little, I got up dex to use bows, which are very effective in this game in PvE. After getting more than halfway through the first playthrough, I had a solid build, so I started branching out to other skills, like magic and so forth.

In regards to the large knight boss at the end of 1-2, I was able to beat him without getting hit once.

Used a bow. After clearing the archers at the top, you stay at the top and just pop out between his range attacks and shoot him. Took me about 200 arrows because my skill and bow sucked, but I pulled it off.

Just started this game yesterday. Very brutal, but diggin' it so far.

I keep dying in the first world against some lancer dude on a bridge. He charges in and basically impales me in one hit. Can't seem to get a grip on the tactics required to take him on. My shield guard doesn't seem block the attack.

That sounds like you are talking about the red eye knight. Best way to deal with him at the start of the game, don't mess with him at all. You can't get into what he is guarding until after you get a key later in the game, and he can one shot most classes to start.

The best way to fight him, run at him across the bridge with the Thief's Ring on and fight him in the area he starts off in- roll to dodge his attacks and hit him once or twice then back off and save stamina so you can roll when you need to. Unless you have a good shield, heavy armor and lots of stamina you aren't going toe to toe with him until much later in the game.

Man, I super appreciate you chiming in on this. Now I don't feel completely worthless in the game, knowing that I probably shouldn't be messing with him right now.

I don't see how people even have fun using such a boring/cheap strategy, but it really does work well in most of the game.

That said, I went toe to toe with Tower Knight and beat it without getting hit. It's not really hard, even when you aren't hiding in a corner.

Yeah, Red Eyed Knights can be difficult in the beginning. It is probably best to avoid them. But if you can take them down, they give you a good bit of souls for the level you are at.

I'm finally getting the hang of things. Beat the 2nd world, plus the first portions of 3, 4, and 5, and I'm working on 1-4 now. The blue dragon is a pain in the ass...Doing this level so I can be done with ostrava and get the key

I'm getting people to play this still. I'm guessing that the difficulty/rewards are just to awesome to actually stay mad at it. That and its a pretty game. :3

This game royally kicked my ass and I'm not even close to finishing it. I might have to start over because I'm pretty sure my character is gimped. 🙁

The 1-4 boss is far more difficult then any of the others(including the final, heh, boss).

How many stages are there in a level?

1 goes up to 4, 2 through 5 go up to 3. For the most part, there is only the arch demon to deal with in the '3' section(a few minor mobs, but they aren't full levels like the others).

What are your stat distributions?

I'll have to check when I get home. I haven't really played the game since it came out because of frustration. I figure it'll be easier if I just start a new character though. Or maybe not. *shrug*

I've seen that speed run before but never watched it. Just watched a bit, and wow. crazy how fast he takes down bosses, makes me want to make a magic character
