meanwhile over on https://old.reddit.com/r/democrats/ posts about Mamdani winning the NYC or anything in general are banned, seriously, have a look at that shit
Apparently they have a rule no topics on democratic socialists. They need to drop that one.

Dems are skiddish embracing a self described Democratic socialists. They are worried about the label he is the "face" of the party.

Out of the 257 Democrat members of Congress only 4 describe themselves as a "democratic socialist". When asked if Mamdani is the face of the Democratic Party the answer is Mandani is part of the diverse fabric that is the Party. Remind there are only 4 but that is why embrace having a diverse party.

I would rather have a socialist as part of the party vs having racist as part of the Republican Party.

I’m curious, why do you think they shouldn’t be free?
Best practices from successful transit agencies all over the world all charge for their buses - I think it keeps them focused on their purpose of transporting people while if they're free they will become spaces to congregate for other reasons.

That being said I'm very much in support of subsidizing fares for the poor so they can still access buses.

Yes.

A free bus every 20-30 minutes sucks. Miss it and you have this huge wait, incentivizing people driving instead. Whereas a bus that is $2 and comes every 5-10 minutes is much more convenient and doesn't require as much scheduling on the rider's side. Throw in some bus lanes to help the bus stay out of traffic and you're in business.
1000% - it's amazing how bad American cities are at building transit infrastructure because they don't understand speed and ease of use are what matters, not coverage area. San Diego was terrible about this; they had buses that went all over but they would come like once an hour, making them nearly useless.

If you want to make mass transit pick the one area where it makes the most sense and make your transit there awesome because then people will use it. Once you have that then expand further but it should always be with a focus on providing a service that people will want to use.

I don't think they need to do a divide and coup. It's a big tent political party. If anything, you just need people that don't engage in unnecessary intra-party warfare nor let themselves be dragged into it by pundit-journalists looking to publish another "Dems are fighting" story.

Also, the "DNC" is very weak overall. In the US, the national party is just an amalgamation of all the state and local parties, and state ballot access laws let anyone run (and potentially win) on a primary line for a party. The parties are not strong gate keepers at all, nor is there much of a mechanism to punish members that step out of line.
I think they need to drive the donor class out. IMO the dems problems is that a lot of them is beholden to the same morons as Republicans cause they too are eating out of the billionaire class hand.

Cant win without em! - they say.

Well. It seems like you can. It might actually be required.

That's a problem across the board. People with money think that because they have money, they know everything and should get to dictate everything.

There is no face of the Democratic Party. That's the distinction here. Trump has battled to become THE face of the R party. That's absolutely authoritarian. The Democrats need to reject that entirely. We the People is where it's at for the Democrats.

Edit: BTW, @HomerJS, you may not know this but a battle line was drawn some years ago:

Repubs call them "Democrat members", but Democrats call them "Democratic members." Beware of people who say "the Democrat Party." Those are R people.

Pelosi has declared that she won't run again. I think she should have retired about two terms ago but I won't join the rage wagon on her. While she is farther to the right than I care for, she restored discipline to the party as best she could.
best insider trader in congress finally called it quits...slow clap's all around

That's the mistake the Clinton's made. Getting too chummy with them. Sure the money rolled in, but for what.

Pelosi also whipped votes against the Iraq War before she was speaker, even when it was an unpopular position, and again for the ACA when it was on the brink of collapse after the upset special election in MA ended the short-lived and fragile supermajority in the Senate. And in general, was a very effective Speaker of the House.

I agree that transit should have a nominal cost.

For one, it creates a dedicated constituency of people that feel like they can demand something from their political leaders because they pay a use fee, vs something that is only paid for with tax money. In a downturn, the thing viewed as a handout is likely to face more substantial cuts.

There are also better ways to improve transit over giving away rides, like reducing headways to reduce waiting times.

And for NYC in particular, something like 40% of the budget is from fares. That is a massive amount of money to replace.

I assume New York doesn’t have traffic issues and their corporate tax rate and income tax must be pretty high compared to other states if the only option is collect money from fares and not by raising taxes. I’m also assuming the cost of living in New York must be decent if they aren’t trying to promote commuting into the city. I’m sure they don’t have issues with employment either otherwise they’d probably want to make it easier for non city dwellers to have access to jobs.

But that’s a lot of assuming.

Her biggest fault as far as I can tell is that she didn’t pass or her institutional knowledge or her secret to getting things done. Having an up and coming figure like AOC who knows the rules and tricks to getting votes seems like a win and a necessity in order to get things done.

Are there any world class transit systems that are free at point of use?

In a land of limited budgets, you need to prioritize, and the priority should be on service quality.

You're also forgetting something.. a lot of the low costs are subsidized by foreigner mark ups.

Free/ Low costs for locals but tourists get to pay 350-500%.

Well I don't mind her especially her fights with MAGA, but what really fucked over America for a generation (or perhaps longer) is RBG.

She shoulda retired under Obama before 2015.. instead we now have a 6-3 maga court.

Do not underestimate that fuckup.. it's the biggest self owns in American history!

That's not really true if you look at Japan, France, Italy, Spain, the UK...
