On another note is it illegal to have a plant in a race to sway voters whose support comes from an opposing party?

Depends on what you mean about 'plant'.
The only time this is illegal that I know if is if the candidate running as the 'spoiler' is not actually running in good faith but as an agent of one of the other candidates. That would be fraud at least in the states that I'm aware of. I think there was someone in Arizona who recently had an issue with that, however I can't remember their name. (like the 'third party' person used to work on his campaign staff or something like that)
Generally though unless you have really strong proof that the person isn't running in good faith that's almost impossible to prove. Also, it usually isn't necessary. It's possible to find someone with nearly any political position no matter how crazy, as this board shows quite frequently.
