In the ultra democratic U.S. we don't have absolute self-ownership in any category, especially free speech or freedom of association (64% of the people opposed Muslims being allowed to build a mosque somewhat near ground zero). They don't have much freedom of speech in U.K., (e.g., state owned media) the most democratic country in the world. Yet there is at least one very secular monarchy in Europe that has more freedom of speech than U.S. does. Video games would be regulated by the Federal government if the industry hadn't chosen to do so voluntary because under a democracy, the majority doesn't like responsibility.

Freedom of speech is quite unpopular, actually. How many people do you think would be willing to get rid of the FCC? Certainly not a majority.

This is why democracy sucks, folks.
 
The problem of "democracy"in Turkey, is that is a muslim country. There is no freedom in muslim countries. "Democracy" is but a facade hiding the filth of islam.

What bothers me is this attitude of Liberals, who I assumed were always for freedom of speech and actions, that now, are all hell bent to pile on restrictions to everyone via big government regulations. Why are not those that claim they are Liberals out screaming for more freedom not less?

How are the new restriction on fire arms sales legal?

What about the new commission to top government officals set up to monitor the actions of this nations farmers and ranchers?

Democracy is the means to an end. Freedom is not necessarily that end.

In theory people would not vote against their own interests. In reality we have parties and an elite ruling class that is never removed from office. The individuals among them change, but the party and its institutions are immortal.

Their policies reflect their own interests, not ours. We are but sheep at the ballot box, scared into a fright, running into their loving arms against the boogieman. The people of our 'Democracy' are divided and conquered. We've willingly forfeited our freedoms.

It has happened in Canada. There are government limits on what and who can speak up there. Bobo, the Post Turtle, is on board with regulations that would use the stupidity of "hate speech" to limit what we say. You might want to see what the FCC had planned for the public air wavies.

Freedom is overrated. That's my reply to you. Democracy is more desired than freedom. The idea that the US or any country is all about freedom is BS hollywood history revisionist nonsense. There's no absolute freedom possible unless you are the only person alive which is a ridiculous scenario to consider. As soon as there is more than one person living near each other, there is no freedom anymore. The lack of freedom in the world isn't a problem because people prefer socializing to freedom.

Canadians have never had the right to free speech that is in any way, shape, or form similar to the United States. Nice try.
