I was on a hamachi server after downloading the update, and I couldn't join any games since they were all pirates with the old version. A few of them were grumbling about trying to find the new patch online somewhere when I started smack talking them about skipping a few mac & cheese dinners and just buying it for $40. Smack talking is my 2nd favorite hobby next to playing games. They go hand in hand most the time though.

It pisses me off to no end that this game is so heavily pirated... after what stardock has done to create a gaming atmosphere with no DRM people should have the repsect to buy the game outright. That being said, for games like Demigod I would have happily accepted an impulse account check to verify legality of your game for online play... much like steam. Of course you can only update if you legally purchased it (for now) so the more patches that come out the less pirates ruining our fun.

Honestly, this is a game that should be pirated. It's a great game, doesn't have a demo...and as a matter of fact, the pirated version is close to a demo. The main pull of the game is online play, so I'm willing to be a lot of people that pirate it will want to buy it in the end. The number discrepancy might seem huge right now, but a lot of pirates go through a game a day, trying them all out a little before moving on to the next shiny object.

What I'm trying to say is, other than the bad reviews they've been getting from the multiplayer problems, piracy won't hurt Demigod, it will only help it. Multiplayer games are pretty immune, even with hamachi and the such.

Edit, and no, a CD check wouldn't help. For one, a lot of people bought it digitally..for two, those are cracked in what, 2 minutes?

that would be true except the game's online servers have been worse than hamachi since launch (they've just caught up) so the hamachi scene for the game has been pretty huge. Also, a cd key check isn't crackable, its kind of like what diablo 2 has for b.net play for example. Sure you can crack it and use no cd but you can't play on b.net unless you have a valid cd key, end of story.

Jesus I hope you're not being serious. If the online multiplayer checking for a valid CD key could be cracked in two minutes don't you think nobody would pay for StarCraft or Diablo?

Yeah, the whole pirate situation is pretty said.

Almost everybody pirates nowadays...

At least everyone I know that plays games, which as to be at least 30+ people.

I'd say it is worth the money, just borrow it from a friend or pirate it and if you like it buy it, that's what I generally do and that's what I've done.

I bought retail and there is a cd-key. You probably just don't see it if you buy online.

The thing is, basically Stardock takes a stance that the people who pirate their game probably wouldn't buy it in the first place, so they're not really losing a sale. Besides the more people like a game, the more likely they are to buy it.

And yes, it is definitely worth the money.

Not that I'm complaining, but they seem extremely hands off on the pirating front. Unless I read some of the posts above wrong Stardock can't even tell the difference between a pirated and legit version of the game when a user connects online?

I would think even though you aren't considering pirated copies lost sales you'd want to break the chops of a pirated user's copy as much as possible.

I just bought it off of Impulse. Was kinda hoping I could play before bedtime but it's only half done. Though 200 KB/s is pretty impressive :)

They have a hard time telling which one is pirated version and which is unpatched. They keep the old beta servers online for the people who are unpatched. Where as for the rest of the servers, any unpatched games will not be able to play on the servers, and if you're not registered through Impulse, you don't get the updates.

Sorry guys, I read "A CD key check could only help this game." as "A CD check could only help this game." Hence me talking about it being cracked quickly and digital distribution.

As others have pointed out, even that wouldn't solve the problem as what's hitting the servers so hard is just the game pinging the main server/asking for updates, and they coded that so it would happen before you entered your CD key (probably just in case they ever needed to change how that happened).

If I understand this correctly, you need a patched version to play the game and the only way to patch the game is to register the product online? Sure sounds like Steam to me. . .

Yes, but you also didn't read half the information including the GOO, which allows you to change your registration to someone else should you decide to sell the game.

I find the most amusing part the sheer number of people who have no clue what they are doing when playing online. My last two games were something like 15+ kills, 0 deaths, random assists, with the other team getting absolutely obliterated.

Maybe I should stop playing Rook, he's just stupidly OP atm.
