I know right. I had put this power supply in it and it worked fine so the 24 to 8 pin power cable is ok. I pulled it so I could use the EVGA in another system and replaced it with the Thermaltake. The system powers on and all the fans spin up but the system won't post. It gives this LED error code. Pulled one of the memory modules and it posted. Just glad it wasn't an incompatible power supply. So once again some memory issue. I'm doing a CPU stress test, ie running Handbrake which runs all 4 cores and 8 threads at 100% for a couple hours. Then I'll check the other memory module. Then replace the MB. Fun.

Bad Motherboard, Memory, or Processor
  • If you can troubleshoot, narrow down the issue by reseating the memory and swapping a known working memory module, if available.
  • If nothing works, replace the motherboard, memory, or processor.

Exciting update got everything switched out. I took the opportunity to remove the hard drive cage and remount it higher so now I can use a much longer video card. It posted ok but wouldn't boot saying it couldn't find the OS. I got into BIOS and it is indeed showing dual channel memory with the modules in slots 1 and 2. Now just to figure out how to get it to boot. The biggest take away from this is I'll unlikely ever try to upgrade a Dell. Dell sucks in pretty much every way. They go out of their way to make it difficult to upgrade so they are pretty much A holes. I literally had to use a hammer, drill and Dremel tool to get it out. The HP I got looks much easier, a lot more space in the case. Then on to the Lenovo. The Z420 I think I'll use to transcode.

After rooting around in the BIOS finally found the problem. Apparently the board came default to boot to Legacy mode switched to UEFI mode and it booted to desktop. So everything in running to specs, finally.
