DELL moniters

Although their systems are terrible dell offers some nice moniters and many people here seem to have them. Im lookin at a Dell? UltraSharp? 1704FPV 17-inch for the low price of $300. Does low price and 25ms response time mean low gaming and vidio quality?

ok so *Dell new 20" wide LCD 2005FPW. Has anyone seen this beast?* can get 900 posts but no one can help me out (i sound so pathetic lol).

It appears to be general consensus that if you want to game, you're going to want a little better than 25ms. Don't take my word for it, though, as I have no personal experience with LCDs.

If you want to do gaming OR FMV (DVDs, whatever), you don't want any monitor over 16ms refresh... so 25ms refresh is only really good for general web browsing and office applications, but gaming and movies would suffer shadowing effects.

Like with all else, you get what you pay for... if you budget an LCD you're going to get some feature cut, and with the monitor you speak of, what is getting cut to save money is a good refresh rate, which this monitor does not have. If you will do no gaming or movies, that's a feature you can afford to miss, but if you want to do gaming and movies, you'll have to shell out more dough for a 16ms refresh or less monitor.

Dell UltraSharp 15 inch here, 16ms response time - works great for gaming. DVI connection is EXTREMELY sharp. I personally am very very happy with the unit.

Make sure you get Dell's UltraSharp line though - their other line is less expensive, but the response times are slower, and if you're gaming, you don't want to compromise on response time.

I have the 2005FPW. wow.
usually the rating is from grey to grey in ms, not black to white which takes longer.... but still 12ms on the 2005FPW grey to grey and 16ms black to white so it's still really good

well supposedly the new dell ultra sharp 17" has a 12 ms respomse rate (as advertised in the jan catolog). im tryin to contact dell to make sure this is number is right.

Keep in mind that low response rate monitors give up viewing angles and color depth (general rule). I'm not sure about the specific monitors mentioned. I do know that the Dell 1905 with a 20ms listed response rate does ghost some. Works great for movies and the like though. My understanding is that a good quality 25ms monitor should be ok for movies as well, just don't expect too much from games.

good luck

Ed

im still waiting for a reply from dell but thanx for the warning. from what ive been told all dells moniters have 8-bit color so thats not a problem but ill look into the viewing angles.

I didn't think I saw any, either, until I played Need For Speed Underground on mine. I've got two 2001FPs, one for me and one for my girlfriend, and they're great for all-around value, and some occasional gaming; they're just not the best choice for gaming.

I have a samsung 191T that I got the summer before my frosh year in college, and it works great for gaming and watching movies. There is no noticeable ghosting in most situations, and movies look perfect. This is a 25ms 19" LCD running digitally from a 9800pro on my PC and now a 9700 mobile 128mb on my powerbook. Granted faster times are better, but the physical quality of the LCD also has some play.

Keep in mind that need for speed underground blurs stuff on purpose. You can turn it off in your settings.

I know that. I'm talking about ghosting. I never tried playing games except for non-graphics-intensive stuff like Warcraft III on that monitor until recently; then I figured, what the hell, I'll install NFSU for the occasional race break between doing homework, etc. At first I thought it was the blur and glow effects, but it's almost as bad with all of those off. It's the worst ghosting I've ever seen, but I have to believe it would be a lot worse on lower-quality LCDs. It's also not nearly as noticeable with Doom 3, basically the only other 3D game I've played on the monitor.

all i have to say is that dells support is terrible. they returned my email and only gave me a link to the moniter i first mentioned not the 12ms one in question. i did get a 35 dollar off coupon though (laughs)

i know that but the "new" ones are supposed to have 12ms-16ms response time.

by the way how fast is the 2005fpw some poeple said its a 12ms modle. is that true?

Depends how you look at it. 16ms 'black to black' and 12ms 'grey to grey'. Either way it is pretty good though.

so expecting 12ms on the "new" 17" isnt that bad then. im gonna have to order it and find out. just in case any one know dells return policy. 🙂
