Power it up, make sure its in working order. Then connect and external optical drive and reinstall a clean version Windows without Dell's bloat and trialware.

I'm not certain about the Mini 10v, but many netbooks do have a fan, its just small and weak. The netbook hardware doesn't really give off a lot of heat.

The Mini 10v and Mini 10 do not have upgradeable RAM, as I recall?

The mini 10v is upgradeable, its just a pain in the ass. I had to take the entire laptop apart to do it. The RAM is on the underside of the motherboard, so you have to take off the screen, keyboard, top cover, and the motherboard out of the base. It was about 40 min of work for something that should have taken 30 seconds.

Ack, should've have just bought a Wind U123 or Asus 1005HA OP. 😉

That's alot of work I was going to get more memory but I guess I have to leave it at computer store

I just received 2 previously ordered new 10v's from the Dell outlet. With a 15% off coupon, 5% Discover cash back, and free shipping they were $192. shipped each.

I installed Win 7 Ultimate on both from a flash drive. I was surprised how quick it installed, about 15 minutes each. I used WintoFlash to copy Win 7 to the flash drive. I lot easier than using Diskpart or other programs.

Win 7 provided all the needed drivers, but sees the touchpad as a mouse and you loose scroll functions. Synaptics has Vista drivers but no Win 7 drivers, same with Creative for the webcam. They may work with Win 7. Dell has no Win 7 drivers yet for the 10v. The Win 7 drivers are ok for now.

It runs better with Win 7 than with XP. I may upgrade to 2GB. Here's a video tutorial on how to: Link

That's sweet I will have to wait until xp life support unplugged and drivers avaiablie for 10v then I will saify to win 7

Dell has posted all the Win 7 32bit drivers for the 10V, except for Creative's webcam. Creative is always behind in their products' drivers. Win 7 does have its own webcam driver.

I think it is for mini 10v cuz 10v is able to upgrade with memory if win7 is sluggish and mini 10 is stuck at 1GB memory limit

I'm thinking about ordering this netbook. I've had my eyes on a netbook, but I don't want want that is stuck at 1GB of RAM. The 10v looks perfect provided I can get through all the hard work of upgrading the RAM. Three questions I hope could get answered:

1. What kind of RAM am I going to buy to uprade this netbook?
2. If I order the Windows 7 starter kit that is an option with this netbook, will it come with OEM software so that I can do a clean, fresh install of the OS?
3. I can boot from a USB drive absolutely, positively, without a doubt?

Thanks!

You might want to check with Dell Tech Support I remembered talking to tech support few days ago they were going to give me a number for ram only to find out I have Mini 10 instead of 10v and also they sugguested to take it to Dell for memory upgrade for 10v.

I put a stick of Crucial DDR2 667 in the one I dealt with and it worked fine.

That is so good to hear. I can get a 2GB stick of 667 around here for about $25 cheaper than a stick of 533.

Yes, as I posted above you can use Diskpart, Google it, or use WintoFlash which is much easier.
You have to make the flash drive bootable, which WintoFlash does, and don't forget to set the netbook's bios to boot from the flash drive first.

Insert a 4GB or higher flash drive and place your copy of Win 7 32bit in your dvd drive.
Download the program, unzip it, start it from the exec file, click on the transfer wizard ot Task tab. If you use the Task tab choose "Transfer Windows Vista/2008/7 to USB drive".
Click on the Create tab
Select your flash drive and Win 7 disk paths, click on Create.
