Hello,

I do Factory reset in bios but After turn on laptop dell 5010 show message for bios password!! What's it?

When i try for basic password 12345 show "ServiceTag and PPID"

Please help me

In my experience you will need to contact Dell and have them generate a password for you using a Dell Utility... The password cannot be simply erased by resetting the BIOS as it is stored on a separate chip on the main board.

This exactly.

Laptop thievery is common. For this reason, BIOS passwords can usually only be provided by the OEM. Call and present your bonafides and you should get it.

Thanks for answer for all,

I contact with dell before make this thread and tell me a password but not work! and then tell me need change mainboard your laptop if password not work!

but i'm repair and need way for reset bios with open laptop ... is that way for it?

What Dell told you is correct. If the recovery password doesn't work you need to replace the motherboard (or replace the BIOS chip if it is not welded to the board - but it probably is).

Thanks Fardringle, but i live in IRAN and dell we haven't service in iran. my friends tell me in HP laptop if unplug bios from mainboard for 72 hours password will be reset!! is that for dell ?

That only works for some very old laptops. Everything made recently (within 6-8 years or so old) won't let you do that, specifically to help prevent theft. You can certainly try it, if you can remove the chip at all, but it's not likely that it will work since the chip where the password is stored does not require power in order to save the password.

I contact with Dell support in email and just tell me a password and not work!! and in next time tell me need change mainboard!

Also before doing anything drastic, check in this thread over at TechPowerUP.

You might even PM the original person that posted and see if he has the password.

I tried for all password tell me but not work,

Anyway i contact again with Dell support for hardware repair

And tell me this info

To reset the BIOS password, you will need to move the jumper that is covering two of the three pins. On most systems, moving the jumper over one pin will change it. For example if the jumper is covering pins 1 & 2, move it so that it is covering pins 2 & 3.

Perhaps next time you could pay for the laptop instead of other methods?

If that is the case, then someone has to take some of it apart to get to the jumpers to solve the issue.

Also, each unit has a very specific password. That is why I suggested contacting the latest poster on that. You will have to know some numbers off the laptop when it is booting in order to get the correct password.

That is kind of an assumption, don't you think?

Perhaps.

What's your mean?

Only now saw this....like months after the fact. What I mean is identical to having the legal title on a vehicle, tho you can drive one without the transferred title, but it's illegal.

If you were the first owner of this computer, surely, you have registered it with Dell officially to insure support.

Even if you were the second owner, as long as the first one gives you the data you need to fill out the form from Dell, you can change the original registration and become the new, registered, official owner with all the rights of the original one...including asking Dell for the PW you need and getting it.

I note that many of the solutions are for a desktop, i.e., shorting pins, etc. That won't work on a laptop. I suspect Dell does not realize it is a laptop as well. They often have to be sent in.

The "what's your mean?" question suggests OP has another language as first. It could be a ccommunication problem with Dell. I think reprogramming a eprom is what is required.
