It's a fair point to say that Dell over prices and then offers discounts, but here goes anyway:

Inspired by (ok, stolen from) FW, but can't find it here:

Dell is currently offering 30% off on Inspiron laptops over $1200, bought under all catagories (Home/Business/EPP/etc.). The coupon codes are available on Dell's site if you look for the scrolling offers on the main laptop selection pages, so you don't have to get them from EBay.

These coupons are 'stackable' with student and employee discounts, some of which are up to 12%. An addtional 4% can be made by signing up for (or just using?) a Dell Preferred Account.

I decided to go for it since my current laptop is 3yrs old - also a Dell - and is going in for a cleaning before its warranty expires in 60 days.

My deal on a E17005:

Core 2 Duo T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)
17 inch Wide Screen UXGA with TrueLife
2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
GeForce 7900GS
80GB 7200rpm HDD
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R
Integrated WiFi and Bluetooth
Media Edition WinXP
3yr At-Home Warranty
'Free'Upgrade to Vista (+$10 shipping) *maybe after SP1 :p
Various small add-ons (extra PS / 9 cell battery / etc)

Dell "List Price": $2630
After Discounts: $1610 +tax (free shipping) Total discount: 38%
Reformating it immediately upon arrival: priceless
:D

I spend way more time on my laptop than I do on my home rig, so for me its a good deal... oh, and I have never had a problem with Dell service (your experience may vary).

You can always find 20% coupons, but 30% offers only seem to come along a few times a year. Expires 11/03.

Let the flaming begin! ;)

Sorry 'SilentVixen'. You are absolutely right.

An oversight on my part. I will edit the post.

Wow. Sorry all.
No, nobody is missing anything. Except if you count me and certain regions of my brain.
I really am not to on the ball with this one. Too many hours at work!

great price on the e1705 though. Also where did you get the extra 8% in discounts from? I'm looking at buying an e1705 like your's but with just 1-yr warranty and 1gb of ddr2 memory (would sell it and buy 2gb on ebay for cheaper, lol).

so far this is what I'm at:
Catalog Number: 29 E1705S1
Inspiron E1705 Intel® Core? 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
LCD Panel 17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display
Memory 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
Video Card 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce? Go 7900 GS
Hard Drive 80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Network Card Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
Combo or DVD+RW Drive 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Wireless Networking Cards Intel PRO/Wireless 3945a/g
Primary Battery 53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Bluetooth Options Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
Upgrade to Windows Vista Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium from XP Media Center Edition

TOTAL:$1,110.90 (before tax)

Not a bad price, but I wouldn't mind a 38% discount like you.

I believe there's an automatic 4% discount that gets applied for some reason (saw it at Slickdeals) and then another 4% for using a Dell Preferred Account.

I have re-read the rules and this shouldn't get the thread locked....

You can add additional discounts by logging into their employee or student areas. They have very lax standards about who can qualify for these extra discounts. I think if you were once a student, or have a small business at home you can make it work. As far as I can tell from posts at other sites, they really don't take the time to confirm any of the 'information' you provide. If they were serious about the potential for 'abuse', it would be easy for them to regulate. And in my particular case, I do qualify.

My company has a discount deal with Dell. I logged into www.dell.com/eppbuy and just left the 'company code' section blank since I didn't have my company code - using the drop down instead. Doing this gets you to an addtional discount which is outlined in another window on the Inspiron opening page. For me it was an additional 12% as long as I had a 3yr warranty. At checkout, they just asked me to enter the name of my company.
I also took advantage of the 4% from my DPA.

I haven't taken the time to figure out at what point they apply each discount. The 30% is off the list price, but I think the 12% and 4% were from the remaining price. At any rate, it all worked out to a rough 38%!!
I couldn't be happier since I've been building a new laptops on their website for a couple of months but it always landed around $2K before tax. This made it much more affordable to get a pretty decent portable gamer. A similar setup on an XPS would cost over $3K.

Exactly how are you getting the EPP with the 30% off coupon??

When I log into my EPP account, I build my laptop and place it in my cart. Then I apply the 30% off and it says:

Coupons Entered
The following coupons have been entered but require additional information or do not meet eligibility requirements. Click "View Details" link(s) for more information.

Inspiron affiliate offer 30% off $1299+

I cannot get it to work on any EPP order. This ranges from going to Dell.com/epp or using my company ID.

So exactly how are you guys doing this?

Nevermind. You need to specify there's a NEW 30% off coupon. There's been one floating around for the past week or so. It only works for home. The new one works for everything.

im not thread crapping, but personally i think dell's precision laptop and latitude lines are generally better than inspiron. i can't afford buying IBMs (well i can i just dont see the value), but the precision and latitude line are pretty great as well and they come with 3 year warranty

but i'd be hard-pressed to find a precision or latitude with similar specs priced like this e1705 baby. wow.

That would be why they are more expensive. You pay more for better quality.

Very true, but it's a significant difference. The Latitude can really take a beating and not show it.

Even as good as this deal is, Dell is known to have crazy price cuts on/around the Black Friday shopping "season."

I did notice the 30% coupon code when I visited the regular site and the 30% coupon code when visiting through my companies EPP site were different. You can check on that.

I've used the 30% off coupons in the past on Inspirons priced at $1999+.

What makes it great is a C2D nicely equipped at a good price around $1300, and get 30% off. The total pricing of the new notebooks are really low compared to earlier versions.

If one is really price minded, waiting for those 30% off deals is smart.

I don't see it either.

I know it was a single use only. FatWallet has a thread talking about it, but it wasn't from the webpage itself. It was something they got from emails.
