Dell "De-crapifier"

I saw this over at techb@rgains. This may not be that hot, but it is free and it's pretty funny. Quick way to "de-crapify" your recent hot deals Dell laptop purchase. 😛

EDIT: Ah. It's just a homemade AutoIT script. Use at your own risk... or perhaps BENEFIT!! 😀

haha that's great! the first thing I do whenever I buy a dell or work on a new one for someone else is wipe the drive completely and do a fresh format...makes life much nicer 😉

I buy them all the time for work and have to remove nothing except for google desktop and the language bar in the system tray.
You may not know how to order properly....

lol. last one I ordered was a few months ago, a dell laptop for a friend. it wasn't horribly infested like other brands, but it still had plenty of junk on it.

Hahahaha,

Everytime we got Dells in at the place I used to work, the boss always told us to format them right as we pulled them out of the box to undo all the crapware.

My compaq was preload with a ton of crap also.
I didn't feel like searching for all the programs to reinstall so I only uninstalled as much as i could. Runs fine now, but a format would be better.

you realize that now you can A) uncehck half the pre-isntalled options crap before you place your order B) When placing your order via phone (which you should ALWAYS do as you're bound to get a better deal than online... they even let you use most coupons) you can specify "I Don't want all the sh!t" and you won't get it. C) If you're ordering for work, order a business workstation via their small/large business departments... of course they are going to load tons of cr@p on them when you order a home PC online....

My last two new machines have been HPs. Don't complain about the bloatware from Dell until you've undergone the HP experience, which is ten times worse. Worse, HP doesn't ship Windows discs & you have to make your own restore discs (one time only) from a hard drive partition.

I would have reformatted and started over, but I'm pretty certain most of the garbage would have been restored.

It still installs all this other crap Homerboy. For business related purposes - we had a custom image we threw on so what came preinstalled on our Optiplex's we don't give a crap about.

I for one also have a couple copies of XP Pro sitting at home, so instead of spending another $100+ to upgrade to XP Home, use that to get a better screen or bigger HD, and just go ahead and do a fresh install. 🙂 There's no need to knock people for customizing their stuff how they want.

Anyone using Dells (or any other same-hardware system that's ordered in volume) in a business environment needs to get a customized image together. You can even give Dell your company image and they'll preload it for you. That or use a hardware drive duplicator or your favorite drive imaging program. Sure saves a lot of time and makes setups and restores a breeze.

All I know is the Dell laptops at our school take so long just to get from the login screen to the desktop........ grrrr...... I could never live with that at home. And it's not like they're old, either.

That may not be Dell's fault - we have Optiplex's at work and they take about 5 min (literally) to get from login to desktop due to all the IT-installed security, drive mapping, rights-lockdown, etc. There's no Dell-installed crapware on there, it's a custom image (fortune 500 company)

All I can say is I have ordered a dozen Optiplexes from Dell Small Business for 2 business in the past ~6month or so... I have had to remove Google Apps and the Language Bar from the taskbar and that is it. I have not had to remove anything else at all.

I have also ordered laptops and similar from Newegg in the past for business and personal use. HOLY CRIPES. You can't get rid of it all.

Agreed that you can often get better deal by ordering on the phone, but you often lose the FW cashback

There was a big settlement for that. I dont' think HP still does the partitions anymore

My Dell notebook didn't come with a restore or Windows disc. It came with a FAKE paperboard CD, saying to burn your own set from a utility in Windows. :|

I didn't reinstall Windows, but just uninstalled a number of things and it's fine.

all you have to do with dell is call them up and they will ship you a windows CD to match what you bought - - home or pro.

Screw the backup partition... I don't want to waste space on my laptop for that crap.

I called them up and asked for ALL the cd's that they used to ship. All software, drivers, etc.

They sent them to me, and the first package didn't include everything that I needed, so I called again, and they sent me basically everything again, including another XP cd.

But I have extra copies of pro so I didn't really need windows cd's anyways.

What comes on the Dell Depends on what kind of Dell it is.

Dimension or Inspiron = loads of crap

Latitude, Optiplex, Precision, or Poweredge = Fairly clean Windows install

That settlement only impacted a handful of Pavilions manufactured a while back.
All it provided customers was to get Recovery Disks IF they met all the criteria.

HP still does partitions and does not ship Recovery disks for the most part on units from their Consumer division products: oddly enough some units ship with Recovery disks, but not all.
Don't know how they are handling the Commercial products.
