dell and lcd warranty

to make a long story as accurate and simple...

last nov purchased a dell 2005

4 weeks ago started noticing some "bleeding" on the screen (best way to describe it is that the screen looks like wallpaper thats been wet when your roof leaks)

finally got a hold of dell and we discussed the situation

was led to believe they would send me a NEW monitor to replace the one i have

recieved a monitor today (really quick) but it was marked refurbished

called dell and they said because I bought it in 04 they could only send me a refurb

????

i find this not to be acceptable and was told I would hear from a dell manager later today

didnt open the box...

am i wrong here for wanting a replacement of equal value?

I hope someone with some experience with dell and similar situations as this can speak up and give me some direction

thanks

jd

Of course.

Do you think your insurance company should buy you a brand new car if your year old vehicle gets totalled?

You had a used monitor that died.

You got in exchange a used monitor that works (and presumably continued warranty coverage). If that's not equal value I don't know what is.

Shut up & be happy.

^ what Viper GTS said.

Most warranty coverage only entitles you to a refurbished replacement.

Replacement with a new item is generally only offered for perhaps the first 30 days, as a courtesy not a requirement.

Whether it is acceptable to you or not, a refurb is all you are going to get, most likely.

I have considerable experience with Dell and I will pass on a truth about them. If you buy a brand new computer and the motherboard in it is DOA, they are going to send out a refurb motherboard. It's just the way they work. In fact, even if the part they sent out is new it will usually be marked refurb.

Been there too many times.

With DOA products or within a very short period of time (a couple weeks, maybe a month) I would argue that a new replacement is reasonable (and I would demand it in the case of DOA).

However...

8 months into a (1 year?) warranty a new replacement is absurd.

you paid for a warranty that says they can send out refurbed parts at their discretion, and you expect to get new parts?

it kind of stinks but that's the way it is. the good news is that the refurb unit carries the warranty of your laptop so even if it bombs out you'll get another one.

A set value? What kind of insurance do you have?

Unless you have some extremely unusual vehicle (or are extremely paranoid and willing to pay the premiums) you are almost certainly wrong about that.

Besides, even if you do pay for insurance at a set value for your vehicle (raither than fair market value) your monitor purchase from Dell did NOT come with those terms.

You're subject to the terms of the original purchase, you don't have the luxury of deciding now that you want a new monitor (when yours was 8 months old).

insurance isn't going to give you what you pay for you car if it is totalled 6 months later

heck they won't even do it if it is wrecked the day you drive it off the lot

you are going to get what is it currently "worth"

After 8 months it is not new, just like your car is not still new after 10,000 miles.

Like it or not, this is how electronics warranties work for virtually every company.

Or maybe he's 14 and has no clue. 😉

most warranties send you refurbished and its in their policy..they only send you a new one of its DOA or it died within 30 days usualy? correct me if im wrong

Do what I did, just bitch enough to get your money back. Although mine was about 2 months. But I got my money back, and bought it even cheaper on the next sale.

Nope you're not wrong for wanting a replacement of equal value. But you got one. You monitor is 7+ months old. It's used. Think if you sold it today (assuming there were no problems with it) you could convince someone 7months old = "new"?

My parents bought a Benz about 3 years ago and they had a type of protection where, if the car is totalled in the first 2 years they would get the full value of the car back. So there are some exemptions.

totally agree and respect what your saying but by the same token if you purchase a $700 peice of hardware you would expect it to stand up on its own for a substantial longer period of time...heck I would even consider them taking it back and fixing it a good deal...

neverless, I have heard enough from this thread to convince me that I was expecting to much...

Yes there are EXCEPTIONS. It's called "replacement value" insurance, and it's more expensive. On many collectible cars you can pay for a stated value policy as well as the "blue book" value is wrong or non-existent. And again it's more expensive. And expect them to want to inspect the car. And if you make a claim, they'll probably fight you on it...

OP, it won't hurt to tell them how you feel. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll see it your way. But I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

hmm that is pretty insane

is that provided by the insurance company or mercedes or the dealer?

because if this was mercedes specific than I would assume it is from the dealer or mercedes.

that is unless it is some E55 AMG or better than maybe they might offer something like that
