yep, unfortunately. the 10% neutralized it but regardless, the bottom line price from staples sounds better.

I wish I could see and use a Dell Inspiron 4150 in person so I could compare these two.

I have seen and played with the Compaq Presario 1500 at CompUSA and CostCo and LOVE it. The chasis is great, the LCD display, two USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, and it looks great.

So do you buy online using the $300 and $30 coupons then take your receipt into a Staples B&M and use the $50 coupon? Sounds confusing to me then again I haven't read the entire FW thread.

I finally found the FW HD thread it has HP ZE5000 in the title.

Damn that $75 shipping, any ways to get around that?

last time i bought something at staples was over a year ago when they had free shipping, i'm sure you'd know more about staples policies than i do.

as for the $50 coupon, apparently you add the lappy, luggage, and coupons, then go to a staples in-store kiosk where you can pull up your account and hit "buy at register", and proceed to the register where you hand over the $50 coupon (and cross your fingers).

given that the celery 1.4 is cumine based and the p4 1.5 is nw based i'd say go with the celery... its probably faster in anything but games, and probably has better battery life.

EDIT: on the desktop at celery 1.4 is about as fast as a p4 1.7 (willy). now, the notebook p4 has more cache... the performance is real close, best guess.

dc - What do you think of the Dell Inspiron 4150 vs Compaq Presario 1500T? It sure would be nice to have two USB 2.0 ports (I'll probably never use except for a mouse), FireWire and a 15" SXGA display.

Get the Dell. I have a bargain Inspiron 8200 I picked up on line at Dell not too long ago, and it rocks. Yours is speced a bit better too. I'm starting to get used to the screen resolution. Some times I hate it, others its ok.
Plenty of performance, not enough hardrive in mine(20 gig) but other than that, it does a good job. When the laptop is in my office, the speakers built in are not what I'm used too, so Iwill invest in some more robust sound.

In fact, I am thinking of getting the docking station to be able to use a standard CRT and keyboard/mouse. Then I can take it with me when I need to go mobile. The compfortable use of a regular keyboard and CRT monitor I do miss. But I need the laptop in business.

i couldn't get the extra 10% coupon for the dell, but i ended up going with the Compaq 1500T.

COMPAQ PRESARIO 1500T NOTEBOOK
15.0INCH TFT SXGA+DISPLAY
ATI RADEON 32MB 7500 MOBILITY
56K V92 MODEM
256MB DDR SDRAM 1 DIMM (1 extra slot to upgrade later)
MOBILE INTEL CELERON 1.40
30GB HARD DRIVE
8X DVD
WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION
8 CELL LION BATTERY
1.44MB INTEGRATED FLOPPY
INTEGRATED 10/100 NIC CAR

$1,355.57 before $100 rebate, $1,255.57 after.

external firewire cdrws go for less than $100, so i'll be picking one of those up sometime later on. the laptop weighs about 1lb more than the Dell Inspiron 4150, but that's the tradeoff i suppose.

Big Pluses over the Dell: 15" SXGA (i compared the 14" XGA and the SXGA and i must say, it's a drastic improvement. something you want to look into), 1 firewire and 2 usb 2.0's, as opposed to the Dell's 1 USB 1.1 (i believe). Also the Radeon chip. Heh, my dad's bday is coming up, the free luggage will help out there ;) oh, and the compaq looks spiffier too :)

Minuses: half the memory (but i'm sure i'll eventually fork out the extra $70 for another 256mb), and a celery cpu instead of the 1.7ghz. also i don't get a convenient dvd/cdrw combo, but on the bright side i get to use the cdrw with other machines.

dc - Thanks for your input. Staples is currently advertising a $100 rebate which is nice, very nice.

I HOPE Staples B&M is a Compaq BTO participating retailer because if they are then you can get the FREE WiFi offer! Not sure if this is valid for Staples.com offers though although it's a Compaq BTO technically you're not using a 'kiosk'.

ZeroBurn - You are going to SH!T your pants when you see my Hot Deals thread in a little bit :p

I got the exact same config as you but mine is a few $$$$ cheaper ;)

1) Did you have to pay extra for 1 SODIMM or is that by default?
2) Did you upgrade to the 66 wHR battery?
3) You are going to LLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE that beautiful 15" SXGA display, it feels great not having to "settle" doesn't it?
4) Didn't you use the $300, $30 and $39.99 free luggage coupons?

i got all but the $50 coupon since we don't have a staples anywhere near here.

i had to pay $55 for the single stick configuration of memory, but i figure it'll be a good investment when i want to upgrade to 512 later on and can. i hate feeling limited. i also upgraded to the 66wHR. after checking out the XGA 14" at circuit city i thanked my lucky stars i missed the dell deal.

here's the staples receipt i got:

Do you have broadband (cable internet or DSL)? If so then all you need to do is buy a WAP (Wireless Access Point) and you can surf the internet without wires from anywhere within your house using your FREE WiFi card from Compaq. That's how it works.

Perhaps I should have paid the extra $55 to get 1 SODIMM, because Crucial.com has 256MB SODIMM for $76.49 after 15% off discount.

I'm sure that 256MB should be enough for XP Pro, whaddya think?

What really sold me on SXGA displays is a Dell Hot Deals thread where someone said you HAVE to see an XGA vs SXGA in person. So I thankfully took their advice, went to Circuit City and CompUSA I saw several 15" SXGA's and they reminded me of my beautiful Dell P991 (FD Trinitron 1280x1024@85). Plus you've got an ATI Radeon 7500 32MB running the show so it should be beautiful.

Why are you cancelling your Dell order?

I prefer the Compaq Presario 1500T because:
1) It's cheaper, come on $937 with FREE LUGGAGE and FREE WIFI card.
2) Two USB 2.0 and one FireWire port, Dell only has one USB 1.1
3) Beautiful 15" SXGA vs Dell's 14" XGA.

i'm considering cancelling my dell order for the 4150SE for those same reasons, plus:

-the 4150SE has the iffy BIG rebate
-the compaq is so much nicer looking. hehe

Two very good points. I spoke with a Dell SB sales rep who said there's a good chance that people who used a 10% coupon will NOT have their $300 or newer $400 rebates honored ... that's gonna piss off A LOT of people. There were warnings posted in HD but a lot of people decided to take a gamble. If they get it then I'm thrilled for them.

I've played with the 1500T at CompUSA, CostCo and BB I liked it's chasis, the keys felt nice, the screen was bright, sharp, crisp and it looks hella awesome.

i played with the 1500 at frys a few weeks ago, liked it a lot except for the 14"xga that particular model had. 15"sxga+ good. mmm. :)

Yep I'd say you're definitely at greater risk of having your $300 rebate declined because of those two $100 rebates.

15" SXGA = :D
